William Busch (1901-45): Piano Concerto (1937/8) - Piers Lane (piano) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley.  Dynamic work, enjoyable without being particularly memorable.

It is not clearly stated in the booklet, but probably Manze is the soloist here.

Lili Kraus opts for a long, slow Adagio opener in her Parlophone recording, and she plays it subdued and serious, but not heavy.  Ornamentation is tasteful, and there's no real attention grabbing pianism; it's the music first and last.  The minuets are likewise pretty much straightforward and unfussy, while the stripped down Allegro is fast and clean, with Kraus letting her fingers do almost all the work.  Of course it's excellent.

The booklet isn't clear but my copy of the disc came with a catalogue and there it indicates that Rachel Podger is the second violin in BWV 1043 & 1060 and Andrew Manze is designated 'violin' so presumably the soloist in BWV 1041 & 1042.

I like these recordings very much. :)

Ah, dear favorites! Is there any better Mozart to show what a traditional orchestra can do with this music?

It's got a bit of a "What if Celi had done this symphony?" vibe.  Total running time is 38 mins. (compared to, say, Kirill Petrovich at 26:30).  Always gripping, the line remains taut.

This is, what I always assumed based on the fact, that Manze was leader of the AAM after Hogwood, and because he is named as no.1 on the cover.

Try as I might, I've never mustered much enthusiam for Bernstein's WP Shostakovich on DG. Every time I hear the 6th symphony's Largo, this picture pops up in my head:

And yet, his NYPO 5th (in NY or in Tokyo) tops my list of favourite versions...

This piano duet version is certainly very fine. Warner has licensed the (so far only orchestral) recording by Roth & Les Siècles for its box (it also includes a piano duet version). It's probably not enough to make me consider getting that box too. ;)
