Awesome, Nik. 8) I especially love Diamond's 3rd and 4th symphonies. Two of the finest American symphonies ever composed IMHO.

I'm just about to listen to his 3rd right now. :) And I only managed his 2nd yesterday, so I'll look forward to hearing his 4th. 8)

"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Now - this is very good!  I am much more drawn to Symphony No.1 than Nos. 2 & 3. It has slower, thoughtful and brooding passages that resonate well with me. It is surprising to learn that this was a disaster for Rachmaninov when it premiered.  Did the audience expect something more "modern", i.e. Prokofiev style?

No, no . . . it was that Glazunov was tight as a Lord when he conducted it.

The problem was mostly an unsympathetic conductor, the story is well worth reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._1_(Rachmaninoff)#First_performance

And again, it is a pleasure to have been preempted by Karlo  0:)

In the early days he wasn't making so many recordings over such a short period of time, more care was taken.

One case in which the rise to "stardom" was a snare unto the artist's feet?

It IS a pretty weird name, even in Korean think it would be a bit odd...
Anyway, it's this box. Moonfish turned me on to it.  My purchase of the year so far.

100 well filled disks, mostly live, very decent sound, for about $95, delivered.

TD: Tretyakov VCs.  Listening to the Paganini now. Spectacular.

Ah, I sense your enthusiasm for Langgaard through the web. Great commentary as one really gets a sense of your perception of Stupel relative to Dausgaard. This recording seems enticing. I'm sampling symphony No 10 via YouTube (Dausgaard) - quite a powerful beginning! There has been a lot of Langgaard energy on GMG lately.....  :)

Yeah, Langgaard is certainly a 'fun' composer to get to know. So far, I have to say that Stupel doesn't disappoint. In other news, I changed my avatar because I felt I should have an avatar of a composer who was there at the absolute beginning that introduced me to classical music and Bartók was the first composer I seriously ever listened to.

I enjoy it very much!

I was just speaking about this disc with someone who thought it better than some other of his releases.

First listen to Svend Erik Tarp's ballet "The Dethroned Animal Tamer", new on Dacapo and blessed with a light, Ibert/Poulenc-like sense of humor to match its ridiculous name.
