I was, since I listened to the the first recording of Gipps second symphony, convinced of her extraordinary qualities as a composer. This work and performance was treasured by me. This new Chandos is however not only sonically much better but also as an interpretation on a much higher level as Bostock's take. He is not to be dismissed however on that account, for he still holds a close grasp to my heart.
I heard many remarks about the 4th symphony on GMG, as music you have to get used to, compared with the second symphony, and that its logic is a bit wayward, and less focused. Well I only have to listen to the introductory theme in the first movement, starting off with a Moderato, to know that this is also a truly great work of sublime art. When it flows over in a Allegro molto just to glide into the Poco meno mosso, I am totally in awe of this transition. Hammer on my head as much as you like, but this part of the symphony is cemented into my brain. Truly amazing in every respect. Knights in armour already shows her greatness, as Song for Orchestra, 8 years later shows her matured into one of the best Composers Britain could possibly hold. She is a marvel, nothing less. So more music of her hand will be more than welcome.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Generally agree about the proper symphonies, especially as applied to the first 5 or so. The 10th was a hoot, however.

Thanks, I'll give it a fresh go.

That was nice, I particularly liked the resonant chiming sounds, they added atmosphere around the other instruments :).

Thank you!

This looks suspiciously similar to my recent purchase.

Amazingly intense stuff but I may have to put something quieter on in a minute (it's been playing for very nearly an hour).

It took me a few listenings before I got a grasp on this music, but now that I finally arrived, I acknowledge its greatness. As well structured as his chamber music, with a very logical strain in these highly complex compositions, in which many melody lines walk at the same time in the same road. When able to keep track it's a wonderful ride. State of the Art recording. Recommended.

And as a last treat to my ears today, I play the 4th symphony again of this highly gifted composer, she is quickly getting under my skin, so much is the music getting at me.

Yes, ORF is the place to go. I've ordered from them before.

It arrived today, one CD broken but the other, the one with l'homme armé is fine. Astonishing music, mystical, powerful. I hope they manage to replace the broken CD soon! It sounds very good, holographic, it's like they're in the room!

Never heard of her and thought that she might be a contemporary composer. But evidently not. Just sampled her 7th Symphony on You Tube which sounded very engaging. Like Ruth Gipps, another largely neglected female composer of great talent. Like you the Gipps's 4th Symphony immediately appealed to me.

An hour of niceness - piano based minimalism drives me mad but the electric organ, electric harpsichord, processed saxophone and so on give it enough variation in timbre to be interesting as they loop, drone and tootle around :).

Ah, Christmas in Poland 1980 ;). It reminds me of the notes to the CD of Tangerine Dream's Poland tour of December 1983 where they had to play their truckloads of expensive electronic synthesisers while wearing coats and fingerless gloves as all the windows in the concert hall had been smashed :'(.
