With the complicity of the BP, Abbado manages to take the life out of these works.

I got this collection mainly for the Suk (and Dvorak and Vorisek although this is probably my third recording of the latters symphony, it is an overlooked gem, but would not have bought it for this). Now I am on the third disk and something I would never have though possible, happened: I am relieved that the Enigma variations finally started. This is not a big favorite but after Delius it seems like truly great music! Delius -ugghh. And when I thought it was just boring, enter a vocalizing choir that had been hidden in the rolling green hills or among the underbrush and it becomes worse than merely boring.

Schumann: Piano Concerto [De Larrocha]

A wonderful work which is given an assured, lyrical and poised performance here.

This arrived today. It was in shrink wrap. When I opened it,the foam  plastic inserts had turned a sort of orange and had disintegrated! I cleaned the box and cd's. The set is in very good condition, though (apart from that) and cost £5.05,post free! If the cd's play without problem,I will, nevertheless,be very pleased with my purchase! What a lovely opera! :) :) :)

NB: I bought some marmalade, while I was in town. I haven't had marmalade for years! When I got home,I couldn't wait to sample some. After I'd finished spreading the margarine and marmalade on some white bread,I was looking at this set, before cleaning it (see above!). To my dismay,I'd only taken about two bites, when the orange foam fell, out of the box, onto the marmalade!! ??? :( I quickly made up a fresh slice!!

O dear.......what a misfortune,my advice throw away the foam, it can bring damage to the surface of the CD.

David Munrow: The Art of the Recorder

I have long admired the pioneering work of David Munrow and would particularly associate him with renaissance music. This set contains music performed by Munrow ranging from the 13th to the 20th century. Side 4 was my chosen listening this time and it contains the following music:

Benjamin Britten: Scherzo
Paul Hindemith: Trio from the Ploner Musiktag
Nigel Butterley: The White Throated Warbler
Peter Dickinson: Recorder Music

The Dickinson is a particularly interesting listen

That foam in that condition is disgusting.
Marmalade in any condition is disgusting.

Not bad, but not exciting, IMHO.  Still listening though... it may well get better later on.

Glad to notice that we are  sharing together so much appreciation for the vocal and instrumental music of the early music era. ;)

I'm waiting for this Tudor box.

I am very happy with that, but I am also very sad when I see the images on the news of children in Yemen who die of hunger. They have to die for the desire for power of politicians.

There are LP 'pops', which I guess I find rather less charming than others  8)

The sub-par noise experience notwithstanding, exquisite music.

Sibelius: Symphony No 5 in E flat major - Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, live in the Philharmonie, 2010. In this concert Rattle performs Symphony Nos 5, 6 & 7, as he did at the Barbican Hall in London. I don't think it works as a satisfactory concert and so just listened to No 5.
Have been listening to the original (1915) version of Symphony 5 tonight (Lahti SO/Vanska) - it might not be as tightly structured and cogent as the final (1919) version but, like the 1920 version of 'A London Symphony' by Vaughan Williams I find it more moving in places.

I have always liked this version.
An excellent performance, in my opinion, which I have on CD.
