Tchaikovsky: Francesca Da Rimini [Munch]

This is a suitably atmospheric, intense and robust presentation of this dark tale. The conclusion works up to a powerful, thrilling frenzy.

It's an excellent piece that doesn't get a lot of attention, for whatever reason ... it's typical quality Tchaikovsky- effortlessly melodic, cleverly and imaginatively orchestrated and completely compelling

I've enjoyed this via Tidal, so I bought a hi-res (24/96) FLAC version--there's no comparison in sound--the FLAC is vastly more transparent, detailed, and dynamic. Of course, the playing remains at the same great level.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique [Abbado]

This version is not filled with frenetic pacing or tormented and phantasmagorical depictions of diabolic scenes, although it is very atmospheric. Rather, I think that it focuses on narrating the story, which it does very well.

Agreed on all points.

Selim Palmgren: Piano Concerto No.2 "The River".

Palmgren is rather dismissed by the great and the good of critique. I am always highly suspicious when they repeat the same thing over and over, in Palmgren's case that his music is not distinctive enough. Lazy journalism, one comment which is followed infinitum. All may be correct but "The River" is a piano concerto which I very much enjoyed and if the rest are half as good then a worthwhile double CD.

I have these concertos on the 'Meet the Composer' twofer series. Wonderful stuff.

The trios by Steven Stucky and Carl Vine are interesting, but the two piano trio works by american composer Pierre Jalbert are more than merely interesting: fascinating, inspired stuff.

I think it's a really gorgeous work! Palmgren's music certainly doesn't deserve a bad reputation.

My favourite recording of this fine work with a very moving coupling:

Lately it's becoming my favorite by him too. A work full of depth. The ending is particularly cathartic and transcendent.

All the Palmgren's Concertos don't disappoint, but I don't feel them so terribly outstanding either.

Musically, this is utterly mindblowing. By hearing it I can't understand so many criticisms towards this composer.
