Next month I'm going to see Traviata at the Met with Domingo as Giorgio Germont, so had to pull this one from the shelves.

Two things I find fascinating about that: first that Domingo is a baritone now; and, two, I heard him live in 1972, also with the Met, but of course singing Alfredo, the tenor role. He's had an astonishingly long career.

Dipping in and out of this set that I bought at the very dirt cheap price of £45  :o :o from the collapsed HMV store.  I believe the Piccadilly branch (or what's left of it) still has a couple of these left over, anyone living in London, rush to get it..... at that price it is a STEAL!!  The sound is so gorgeous, currently listening to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, the only recording of Die Meistersinger I have from Bayreuth and I am just BLOWN away by the majestic sound of this recording.  It is as if I am sitting in Row 1 Center at Bayreuth! The soundstage is well over 3.5 meters and Wagner's music engulfs the entire space and beyond. GORGEOUS!.......simply GORGEOUS!

I am not an audiophile....but this..... this is just too much  0:).

Actually, I think it's quite simple on the Amadeus store: http://shop.amadeusonline.net/

P.S.: "AGGIUNGI AL CARRELLO", caro Premonte.  :)

This Amadeus site is strange. I have created an account and chosen two sets of CDs, but I am not allowed to activate any "metodo di pagamento".

Late last night:

  R. Strauss
Alpine Symphony
A.Nelsons / CBSO

Orfeo

German link - UK link

Bach, for starters:

  J.S. Bach
Suites 4, 5, 6 BWV 1010, 1011, 995*
Hopkinson Smith (lute)

naïve

German link - UK link
*995 is Bach's own transcription listed under the lute pieces, rather than 1012 in Hopkinson Smith's transcription.
(jewel case, re-issues from 1980 and 1992... which may explain the different art work and casing!)

then probably:

  J.S. Bach
The B-Burgs 4-6
Gustavo Leonhardt & his Kuijken Bros.
With Anner "Hip" Bylsma on bass(o continuo)
Recordered by Mr. Bruggen

Recorded by Sony/Seon

Sounds lovely, Sarge (and I am guessing that it is a song about a flower, and not a musical instrument . . . .)

Enjoying the symphonic contrast this morning between, say, the 1'51 third movement of “Papa's” first symphony, and the 26'07 third movement of Dmitri Dmitriyevich's fourth.

Hi Karl,

That Ormandy Shostakovich 10th is what really got me into Shostakovich's symphonies, and especially the 10th.  I think it is a fantastic recording.

I don't actually own it (it was one I had checked out several times from the local downtown library).

PS - On another note, I seem to be in mourning or withdrawal from the Shostakovich symphony and string quartet marathon.  :(

Can we do it again?  $:) 8)

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

The 6th is my favourite Symphony of this composer, and it comes in a stunning performance, with state of the Art sound.
