Struck me as majorly MEH... but odd? Will check as I go through a whole Mozart stack...

Meh is an american word, right? Can you translate it into English for me? Is meh good or bad?  What is meh, the sound or the performance? Is it meh everywhere, or are there just pockets of mehness?

Perhaps W.H. Auden could translate it for you.  (I took it for a Yiddish interjection, actually.)

No. Exactly in the middle.

I have to explicitly remind myself I do not need every recording of this music ever made.  Will go back to Podger, maybe the first Milstein next.

See what you think of this chaconne, live from Oleg Kogan just before he died

Or this straightforward one, which is somehow very eloquent I think, from Felix Ayo

Well, as long as it was before he died, yes, it was live. (j/k)

The d minor concerto (not surprising to any Spinal Tap fans) is particularly rockin'.

The Opera Gala: Live from Baden-Baden (2008, DVD) - Sometimes these affairs can seem a little lightweight, but this one has some genuinely fine singing, especially from Ramón Vargas - what a voice.

Hi Bruce, I agree regarding Ramón Vargas.  Amazing voice.  He was incredible in the Tchaikovsky Eugene Onegin production (with Fleming and Hvorostovsky) DVD.

Yes, yes, yes! I also love his recording of Verdi arias (Amazon has no photo, alas) and checking his discography, there are a few others I don't think I've heard, either.

If that' the live recording from the Concertgebouw, I have it on CD, but it hasn't had its turn in the player yet.  Judging from the youtube, I'm glad I bought it.  It gives the impression of being very deeply felt.
