One of the best CD'S I bought with medieval music.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Now listening to Symphony No. 12. Not one of my favorite symphonies from Shostakovich, but better than most crap that's being written these days! That's for sure.

Did you explore contemporary music then?
'The 'I' is not prior to the 'we'.' (Jean-Luc Nancy)

Teodor Currentzis plays Shostakovich 14

Tremendous performance which has prompted me to reappraise this music. Previously I have listened most to the live Britten, but I think this is even more successful. Strangely life affirming - but then, this is a life affirming symphony, right?

You're kidding, right?

Good morning, Karl.
This has become the Requiem I listen to the most (followed closely by McCreesh and Davis on Phillips). Norrington and the Stuttgarts play wonderfully and with very good Hänssler sound. With Norrington you're always going to get something unique (not that it always works) but his Berlioz is great to my ears. Especially here with the Angus Dei (most beautiful movement in music?), it's broad but never sluggish, the silences in between the opening (and used later) chord swells are breathtaking. And Norrington's treated of the final Amen is one of kind. As the man sitting next to me at the CSO's performance of Britten's War Requiem said when it had finished, "I feel as if I was just delivered." This recording of Berlioz' Requiem has the same effect.  ;D

Hi Chen Tao - thanks for mentioning the Franck 2-CD set above - I have about 10 of the father-son duo's recordings on Audite - even started a thread which needs to be rejuvenated - please visit & start a post there: Eduard-Richard Franck Thread - Dave :)

BTW - I was checking on the Amazon MP - attached is a comment from ImportCDs stating that this set only plays on SACD which has to be wrong - I own plenty of these and all have been hybrid CDs playing fine on a regular CD machine - assume that is correct?

Yes all the CD'S from those composers are Hybrids, but......as I understand there are also SACD only copies floating around, so it could be a true statement. But if the seller states it's a hybrid or SACD only, I would take that serious.

Thanks - 4 of my Audite CDs are hybrid SACD, but I agree that I'll stay away from that offer I posted - Dave :)
