Indeed... topnotch Bartók! I should re-listen to this sometime soon...it's been ages..

Bartók is one of my favorites, so I've got to try to always make some time for him. 8)

A fascinating composer. These SQ are very special indeed.  RE:  John McEwen - SQs

The other 2 volumes are shown below - love the cover art, especially on V. 1 (William Bouruereau - 19th century French neoclassicist/portrait painter) - for those interested, an excellent discussion of his SQ output (from 1893 to 1947) on MusicWeb; the Chilingirian Quartet had the 3 volumes released (2 below recorded in 2001) which total 10 works, so another couple of volumes would have been possible?  Dave :)

Mozart, WA - Piano Concertos w/ Schiff & Végh - came up earlier today, so decided to give the set a listen - :)  Dave

Katy Roberts Perl plays BWV 886, A flat major from WTC 2

Eloquent in the prelude. Each rhetorical gesture in the music very clearly articulated. Not as hyper as Wilson. Not as stately as Leonhardt or as contemplative as Chorzempa. It's like the golden mean.

Vibrant performances, excellent sound.  Haydn rocks!

Thanks!

Sorry it was disappointing. . .  Bummer.

I am looking at this one for part III:
[asin]B000BTE4L6[/asin]

OOP it seems.  Perhaps a new edition will be released?

Not sure what to make of that "new" price there!  Yikes.  That's just silliness. . . :o

The Junghagel recording did not impress me, although I don't have an alternative to suggest for SSIII.   The Brilliant Edition is good as far as it goes, but has the important defect of leaving out some important things, like Psalmen Davids and (if I remember correctly--I don't feel like digging out the box right now) SSIII.

Thread duty:
Earlier this evening,  finished my first listen to Karajan's 1980s Beethoven cycle with Symphonies 4 and 7,
Definitely on the short list of best Beethoven cycles;  I would vote for it over HvK's 1960s cycle (don't have the 70s set), and over most representatives of the traditional "big band" style of Beethoven playing.

Like Neal said, pleasant music.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

This is high quality music. And Catherine Manson is really superb. I think she's the star of this recording.

Hermann Suter
Symphony in D minor.
A marvelous work, of great quality and well performed.

Hans Jelmoli, Three pieces for orchestra.
To get down from the Suter kick, this composer will ease you gently out.

Sterling disc, could not copy the image. For this you know were to go, well some of you do :)

Another romantic that hits a nerve.

Unfortunately, you don't have a lot of choices here: Bernius or Junghanel. That's it.

Junghanel is all about transparency, although it's a bit weak conveying sacred feelings. Additionally, I miss some inventiveness in the continuo, invariably provided by the organ.

Anyway, it's the best option available.  :)
