Listen to A Survivor From Warsaw from the second disc.  That's some cerebral music that most definitely has something to say.
Indeed. My point, which clearly wasn't well expressed, was really that Schulte's playing in the two concerti treats the works as the very opposite of abstract and cerebral. For example, Carter's comments on his violin concerto indicate that it's to be understood (at least in part) as falling into the violin-led branch of the Romantic concerto tradition exemplified by, for example, Mendelssohn. I didn't really hear this in the Bohn/Knussen recording, but it's very obvious here with Schulte's interpretative choices.

I see you've been bitten by the Copland bug. :)
How are the symphonies? I haven't heard any of them.  :-[

Blast from the past?

Some great singers here, I must say. I'm not a big Klemp fan like some here; this was a very good performance beyond question, but certainly doesn't surpass some others from a year or two either way around 1957, like Fricsay for example from just a year later. Still, glad to have Hotter available on demand. :)

I agree, nice but not major league. :) Somewhat overhyped......  ::)

Listening to a beautiful performance of Schubert's The Shepherd on the Rock. A contemplative 12 minute mini-epic.

Solo Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff.  Graffman may be uneven in 19th Century core rep, but his Prokofiev is undeniably top shelf.  His Rach is not quite as good, but it's still quite good.

How do you like those performances North Star? I listen to them now and then, but tend to return to Richter for the late Schubert sonatas.

I like them very well. Paul Lewis is perhaps (even) more refined in tone and nuances in D. 958, and probably in the others too (I only know Lewis in D. 958), but these are excellent recordings. Perhaps Richter is more exciting?

The JPEG compression doesn't do that cover any favors. Also, my copy is silver, not blue-green.

That must be a picture of Reich's original sheet music for the composition...?
