Henning's "Plotting ('y' is the new 'x')"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vKGfppo0o8

I just started listening. It sounds like a lot of fun to play! What's the significance of the title, Karl?
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Karl Henning

Well, plug variables into what has become something of a buzz-phrase, and we get 'y' is the new 'x' . . . from there, I chose the word plotting, since y & x are the axes of a graph, too.

Then, too, since I wanted from the outset for the heart of the piece to be a passacaglia, in a sense I "plotted" its arc.

Peter Hill plays Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux. This is fabulous, and  totally distinctive. What I mean is that he doesn't make the music sound like what it isn't - Liszt, for example (Aimard), or like organ music (Austbo), he gives it its own voice.

Still making my way through this set, Sarge.  I'm saving the chamber music for last!  :)

I like the Emerson's contribution to that set tremendously, more than the Juilliard in the other box. It's a shame that there's no recording of late Webern from the Juilliard with an early line up, as far as I know.

Moonfish, that instrumental and vocal Graupner series by Soly is an unknown quantity for me - love to hear your impressions. :)

Q

Sorry about taking so long to respond. The week has been very busy....

Well, my Graupner collection is not very large at the moment so it is hard to compare. I found this particular disc delightful with a blend of cantatas, concertos and sonata. It would definitely serve as a great entry point to Graupner's music together with the Feuersinger recording. Very clear recordings (often serene) and the ensemble and the singers bristle with energy. I really liked it. I am very fond of Graupner's cantatas at the moment. So much actually that I keep adding Graupner recordings to my wish list!   You know, it is all your "fault" bringing those Soly recordings forward in GMG.   ;D

I need to listen to vol 2 ...

Brahms: Complete Trios
Gould Piano Trio: Alice Neary, cello; Lucy Gould, violin & Benjamin Frith, piano
Robert Plane, clarinet
David Pyatt, horn

Piano Trios: No. 1 in B (1889) ; No. 1 in B (orig); No. 2 in C; No. 3 in c; in A, op. posth. Horn Trio. Clarinet Trio
Quartz, 3-CD set

This is a very solid rendition of the complete trios.

The Gould Piano Trio is an excellent ensemble, a true trio formed and trained to perform this repertoire and not a mere assortment of soloists.

The less successful part of this generous 3-CD set is probably the horn trio and the clarinet trio, where a "stranger" is admitted to this closed circle.

The interpretations are more Apollonian than Dyonisian, without any trace of overdramatization.  :)

Hi Sarge - I have both of the CDs above and really enjoy these late symphony transcriptions

Yes, they work amazingly well as chamber music. I'm especially fond of the 99 and 100 (it was hard to believe, at first, that the "Military" could work so well stripped down).

Your comments on the Schoenberg Qt versions (Chandos) inspired me to listen to the Emerson again. I'm now debating whether I really need another recording of these Webern quartets...the Emerson is so good here.
