Sweelinck, Jan (1562-1721) - Secular Vocal Works w/ he Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam under Harry van der Kamp; a 3-CD set - also available from this group are the Sacred Works (2-CDs) & the much more substantial Psalms (12-CDs), so a total of 17 discs of this composer's vocal music; in addition he was an exceptional and famous keyboardist and had many foreign students, mainly from Germany, a handful becoming renowned in their own careers. If interested in a 'sampling' of his keyboard compositions on harpsichord, the added recording below is recommended - Dave :)

Kitajenko conducts Prokofiev Seventh. Good way to start the work week.

Gosh, I like this symphony more with every listen.

I have the complete set of Vocal works with the original numbered books. Quite a collectors item already.

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Hi Harry - visited the Glossa & Kamp's websites and saw those offerings - a tremendous effort - I just put the 2-CD set of sacred works in my Amazon cart, but don't believe I'm up to having the 12-discs of Psalms.

BTW, I'm sure that you have a bunch of CDs of Sweelinck's organ & harpsichord works?  If so, which ones are at the top of your list?  I just have 2 CDs of these keyboard recordings (the one shown in my previous post & one w/ Glen Wilson on Naxos).  Thanks for any comments - Dave :)

The new erato

A delight from start to finish!

I would recommend this box, all historically informed interpretations.

Thanks Harry for the Sweelinck keyboard recommendation - looks like a great box, but seems to be OOP -  :(

Amazon USA MP had 'new' offerings starting @ about $160 & used ones about 30 bucks less - will add to my wish list, though.  Dave :)

Still on an Early Music listening spree while I read - current ones spinning this afternoon:

Gautier de Coincy (1177-1236) - Miracles of Notre Dame w/ Andrew Lawrence-King & the Harp Consort - poems in praise of the Virgin set to medieval songs by the composer; a delightful recording.

Landini, Francesco (1325-1397) - Ballate w/ Luigi Taglioni and several ensembles - a contemporary of Machaut and the leading Italian composer of the Ars Nova during the trecento.  Another enjoyable recording of mixed vocal & instrumental works.  Dave :)

I got lucky, I bought the Malko  :)
Even then it took me a while to warm to it too much. Then one day it sounded to me more like ballet than symphony, and once I thought of it as ballet music I liked it more.
