Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Listened, on the way to work this morning, to some music "surpressed" by Boulez  ;) :

Jean Françaix: Le Diable Boiteux
A comment by Charles Rosen came to mind: when reading some critic say that there was a "consipracy to keep Pfitzner's music away from concert halls", Rosen's reaction was "What a wonderful idea!"  :D

Hans Werner Henze: Nachtstücke und Arien
This is the piece famously snubbed by Boulez, Nono and Stockhausen during the première at Donaueschingen in 1957. Pleasant enough music, but I always say that Henze knew full well what he was doing by presenting the work then and there, and I think he was looking for this notoriety.  ::)

From this disc: Kochan's second violinconcerto (1980) . Music I do like: strong, dynamic, flexible, with "expressionistic roots" and with, let's say, "a lyrical heart". Kochan, who died in 1990, was a pupil of Eisler and Blacher.

again:

Beethoven: Sonata op. 111

Haydn: Sonata in E flat major, Hob. XVI/49

Josef Páleníček

EDIT: This pianist is so good, a pity there aren't many recordings available.

Seeking notoriety, by writing pleasant music?  You realize how backward that analysis sounds?  8)

Great stuff.
'The 'I' is not prior to the 'we'.' (Jean-Luc Nancy)

I've spotted a place to put the cds in DVD-size packs so I'm playing these to be able to shelve them:
HAHN: Piano Quintet in f, Sting Quartets in a and F
And in the same 2-disc set ROUSSEL: Concerto for small orchestra, Piano concerto, Petite Suite, Cello Concertino
Quatuor Parisii. Alexandre Tharaud, piano, Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello
Ensemble Orchestral de Paris     Davis Stern, cond.
MARCHAND:  Organ works
Frédéric Desenclos, organ of Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral at Sarlat (J-F. Lépine, 1752)
Packages are large size to accommodate extensive notes.

[asin]B002NVLXF0[/asin] not super-duper bargain, but quite reasonably priced for these mostly rare items.

By the way, does anybody know what's up with Sarge? Haven't seen him around in a while.
It's all good...

Awesome stuff. One can hear influence of especially Bartok and some Stravinsky. Wiith De Raaff he is the giant of Dutch classical music (and no, one cannot include Andriessen here, imo. :))

He has ongoing health issues which date back at least to 2010-11. He has good days and bad days, and because of that can't really plan things like travel in advance anymore. Mrs. Rock is also a GMG member, so if things got really bad for Sarge, I'm sure (I hope?) she'd let us know.

EDIT: A couple days ago he posted something suggesting he's gonna be really busy this week, so maybe he's just taking care of business and bazooka-ing his enemies.

Thanks, Brian.  I hope it's the latter and not due to a health issue.

Two works by Aperghis:
A tombeau ouvert (piano solo)
SEESAW

Aperghis, such a great figure in contemporary music. These works are also very fine.

I only know his Récitations, and found them fascinating - long, long ago. I should listen again. It was the time before the Internet, and I couldn't find the recording anywhere until someone brought it with him from France.
