More from Supraphonline:

BACH: Sonata for violin solo BWV 1001
TCHAIKOVSKY: Valse scherzo op. 34 / Tema con variazioni op. 19 / Vremena goda op. 37 - May
RACHMANINOV: Étude-tableau op. 33,3
LISZT: Harmonies du soir

The highlight of this CD is Pavlík's solo violin sonata - beautiful!

Mahler, 4, Levine from his Mahler box. A good one, but not a great one.
Next up
Mahler, 7, Levine, same box.

Running score
1 Superb, one of the best
4 good
5 Best ever
6 Excellent
10 average.

7 Some problems, I think mostly with balance, for which the engineers may be to blame. Not that it's bad but I have high standards in 7, Abravanel, Boulez, Klemps, Chailly. This one doesn't match any of those. Klemps even has better sound in his 60 s recording.  So

7 fair to middling

He has ongoing health issues which date back at least to 2010-11. He has good days and bad days, and because of that can't really plan things like travel in advance anymore. Mrs. Rock is also a GMG member, so if things got really bad for Sarge, I'm sure (I hope?) she'd let us know.

EDIT: A couple days ago he posted something suggesting he's gonna be really busy this week, so maybe he's just taking care of business and bazooka-ing his enemies.

No f...ing health issues for anyone on this forum, ever!  Z7 has spoken thus and his will is made whole.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Thanks, Brian.  I hope it's the latter and not due to a health issue.

+1 I miss the Sarge.

+1 my friend, if it only could be like this.

Hahn's serene playing is a delight. I do not exactly enjoy the third movement in contrast to the first two which I find mesmerizing.

Perhaps you knew this or perhaps not, but when Barber was writing this concerto for the violinist that was going to premiere it, the violinist complained that the music wasn't sufficient enough to display his technique. So, Barber, quite angered, wrote the virtuosic third movement and violinist couldn't even play it. :)

If we want Sarge back we need a contest where he can vote Cleveland off the island.

A couple of first listens on this album, for me:

CD 3 of this excellent box. Very much recommended, so much to explore here for such a low price.

Well played, Karl. :)

I have got the same recording; absolutely beautiful, immersive performances by the Ashkenazies.
