I am sorry, but I cannot listen to Ligeti's Lontano without thinking about The Shining.

Well, it is a great movie. :)
I'll give that recording of Lontano a spin too, now.

Yea! A Lontano party! Almost as good as a Clocks and Clouds party!

Great choice. After I got this, I decided never to buy another Ninth without the finale.
Well, I fell asleep in the middle of the Adagio. :| In my defense, it's a long symphony, and I was very tired. But I really liked the first two movements. And I know it's Studio Magic, but I'll swear the Berlin Phil sounds better than it did under Karajan. Proper listen will be coming soon.

From the opening notes of the Sinfonia, this one never disappoints!  :)

He had a brilliant idea to promote himself: to write great music.  8)

Brilliant!

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Time to join the 21st-century...

Yes it is. Put that serialist twaddle behind you. Embrace minimalism. C'mon Nate, join the 21st century!

:D

BUT... Where do you get the idea that I don't like minimalism? I listen to Nyman at the gym, I have a Steve Reich record hanging in the room I'm sitting in, and I'm even listening to Feldman's Coptic Light as I type this!

My way of embracing minimalism is to listen to the minimal amount of minimalism possible. >:D

(Actually if you count Aarvo Part as minimalism, that is not true at all.)

Perhaps someday, I will like Puccini.  Maybe today's the day.

Que - I've had this set on my 'wishlist' for several years, I believe and just waiting for a 'good deal' - what do you think of this set overall?  I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks, but just have read some variable reivews regarding certain recordings vs. others - thanks for any comments - Dave :)

Listening to Chavez's Sinfonia Romantica. A great work. Oh how I wish an enterprising label would record another cycle of these symphonies.
