My first acquaintance,  I like it already! :)

Splendid!

Quote from: Que on June 07, 2015, 03:23:50 AMThe Amazon rating is dumbed down by a one star review by an "audiophile" complaining that the harpsichord and clavichord insufficiently produce lower, bass tones..... ::) ???

Could someone please help out these mental cases?  >:D

Suggestions?  0:)

Well, complaining that a clavichord or a harpsichord produces too little lower tones is like complaining that donkeys have tails... ::)

I wonder why we're allowing it!  8)

No no. I bought the Abbado symphony box, him being a conductor I rarely heard, mostly late, and it's really outstanding.

Agreed.

Can't wait to hear this; newly rec'd:

Edit:  Yowza, is this wonderful - BIG vibrato, thoughtful yet dynamic bowing.  Curious pauses from time to time to make a point, I think, unsure about those but magnificent playing on the whole and a surprisingly ambient recording from 1948.  Curious to think she's prob. hanging out with the Big Bopper, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, William Kapell, Jacques Thibaud and other musicians who've perished in plane crashes...

The Monteux  box overall (or these specific recordings)? I have been very impressed so far.  Even the early recordings from the mid to late 40s were rewarding listening experiences.

Ah, intriguing! I realize that I have never heard any of her recordings!  :(     I would like to hear the Brahms concerto...and her Sibelius...and.....    0:)

From a review on Amazon:
"Her Brahms is intense, played with delirious passion and commitment. Wherever she is, she got the coveted pearl, the expected bliss, because every time there is a human being [] listening to her records, her absence will be just only metaphorical."

Do you have other recordings with her, Z7?

Love her recordings! There are several ones of her doing the Brahms concerto. She also did the Sibelius concerto, but alas her career was so short, there aren't nearly as many recordings as one would wish for. Her Brahms though is terrific! Vibrant and full of passion indeed! Not sure what's the best way to get hold of her recordings these days, I've got a mix of discs on Dutton Vocalion, Tahra, Music & Arts. For the studio recordings, there's a cheapo four disc set on Documents/Membran, if you're not opposed to those kind of releases.

Nope, the Brahms (of which she was reckoned a specialist) is a singleton for me.  This is on my wishlist :  [asin]B00CIJZJG6[/asin]  I'm always wary of such phenoms, we're a giddy lot and Death, esp. Tragic Death, imparts its own curious - and curiosity-inducing - aura.  But she's the real deal (she beat out David Oistrakh, who took second!, in the Wieniawski Violin Competition, 1935).   About which : http://www.wieniawski.com/1ivc.html

How often does a historic/litterary quote jumps at you like a rottweiler when listening to music ? Well, here:

Wagner: Das Libesverbot, his second opera. Edward Downes conducts an uncut performance. From the DGG Big Box of the compete operas.

Bruckner: the 7th symphony. 2 versions conducted by Otmar Suitner leading the Berlin Staatskapelle (1989, Berlin  Classics) and the other is on the polish label DUX (2008), with Jerzy Semkow conducting the Sinfonia Varsovia.

And the quote is by none other than Napoleon, affronting one of his highest ranking ministers: "Vous êtes de la merde dans un bas de soie"

(OK, I'll give it to you: "you are just shit in silk stockings").
