Giving this a try.

Cool, the Hermann and Dorothea theme is "La Marseillaise". Overall many of these overtures are fairly skippable, tbh - could be almost any composer from the era.

I find there are too many faces of all kinds on CD covers, portrayed in a loud and often cheap way that tries to catch attention and establishes an almost "physical" closeness, which to me is mostly unwelcome, even if I like an artist. They offer artists as if they were whores. But I wouldn't think of looking for art in a brothel.

Glad those two needn't hear that ...

For me its the other way around, Symphonies were no problem for me, but the SQ still are.

It took me quite some time to finally 'click' with Holmboe, but I can listen to him with no problems now. Haven't dug into the chamber works (yet). :)

A while ago I listened to most of the SQ in about a week and they became really immersive music. I do think it'd be a lot harder if I picked just one or two for a casual listen tonight. Also, I found Holmboe's other chamber music more readily enjoyable:

I believe you ordered these recently, MI?

Having said all of the above, I love Holmboe's viola concerto the most loved Holmboe's viola concerto immediately.

Me too. I like the symphonies. The SQs, not so much.

Although this is NOT the type of covers that annoys me. I quite like it, and would be interested in the music :-)

Elgar: Enigma Variations (Levine / Berlin Philharmonic) - A noble interpretation, and the exuberant audience reaction at the end says a lot. Like the Debussy coupling, there's great detail, and considering the source (it's a live recording), the sound is excellent.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;

are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Powerful and emptionally charged version of the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Very impressive!
Bloch's Schelomo is also a very impressive performance.

Hi Karl, the Debussy/Elgar program was recorded in November 1992, at the Berlin Philharmonie.
