First Listen Fwednesday!

Suite No. 1 is pretty boring. Nowhere near the level of (in the category of "French ballets about ancient subjects") Cydalise, Baccus et Ariane, or of course Daphis.

Will continue listening to Suite No. 2, just in case it's better.

Brian

Switching over to music I know I'll like, but performances that are new.

Now:

Listening to Cantata Profana, SZ 94. Great work!

Brian

About once a year or so, my MusicWeb editor will accidentally (or "accidentally") send me a CD I don't want to review, forcing me to take it on because nobody else wanted to. This year, he's chosen a real doozy:

I am NOT looking forward to this.

Try watching this when you get the courage up. It's somewhat interesting. The instrument reminds me a bit of some of the music from the original Star Trek series.

Think of it as a chance to show off your mastery of the lore of theremin.

Besides, it could have been an Einaudi CD

A double CD that begins a five disc run of Couperin performed by Kuijkens.

Ha, true!

Sadly or happily, Jeffrey and Neal, the CD would not play! It contains a movie track, a filmed interview with the artists, and for some reason my CD player would only play the movie, not the audio files. I'm secretly relieved.

Now, a much more familiar assignment:

Hi Brian - my in-laws had a theremin (now in the hands of my brother in-law - not sure if it still works but we played around w/ the 'instrument' in the early 70s) - above added an interesting documentary on the inventor, Léon Theremin (1896-1993) - the theremin was used a lot in films (some interesting history HERE) - good luck in your review.  Dave :)

Since I decided not to buy this box, I borrowed the first 10 discs.  Playing Ansermet: CD4:ALBÉNIZ: Iberia; TURINA: Danzas fantásticas; POULENC: Les Biches

I can't believe how good it sounds!  Crystal clear if not super full sounding, especially at the bottom of the range.
It's all good...

Always a pleasure to return to this set:

More new stuff, and especially sizeable box sets, is piling up these days.
Neverteheless I have promised myself not to neglect this set that I waited so long for to be reissued. 8)

It's mono - but I like it.

My ongoing journey through the SEON box, and until now it's been a good choice to get this box. I dread the Rene Jacobs discs though, were he unsuccessfully tries to imitate a countertenor.. they soon emerge I am afraid.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
