So good is Rubinstein's Saint-Saëns PC numero duo that it is worth the entire price of the RCA Great PC Box.  I kid you not.  But that's not all - I like his performance (same disk) of Liszt's PC numero uno just about better than anyone else's.  And as an added treat his and Ormandy's atmospheric  Noches en los jardines de España cannot be beaten, by anyone, anywhere.  Pounding the table at night in the gardens of Spain!

Is the Saint Saens recording with Wallerstein or Ormandy?  He did it with both.

And the Falla three times according to the book that comes as part of this.
One of the best bargains of my life (well below the current price...and I would say it is worth the current price).

If you look closely you will see cover art with the Eiffel Tower near the center of the image.  That is the Wallerstein recording (coupled with Franck's Symphonic Variations).

Today I'm having a Pique Dame Day:  :)

First I listened to a live recording with Preobrazhenskaya (as countess) under Eltsin, now followed by another live recording from Montreal with Vishnevskaya (as Liza) under Khaikin.

+2 He can't be given enough praise, as far as I'm concerned.  The terrific recording quality doesn't hurt anything, either.

This composer was and still is a revelation to me, I am glad you like it too.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I have a Sterling disc, as well as vol 1& 2 on cpo, and they are all very good to excellent. Now just waiting for cpo's vol 3 to be sold at a discount.

Yep I have the Sterling disc too, and Volume III will come soon enough for budget price, we just have to wait for almost one year or less for that. Sometimes even within 6 months. As long as there are no vocal works on it, I am game!

Me for one wouldn't mind a disc of his Lieder, which was his main claim to fame.

There is a bug in me, probably from my great grandfather, who was a composer and conductor. My love for classical music comes from him, but he also heartily disliked vocal music especially what came after Haydn and Mozart. With me this goes even further back. I like and love the vocal music around Monteverdi and the likes, but there it halts. Well the Bach cantates are on my menu too, but that took some effort on my side.

Saw this mentioned in some thread, and listening to the S-S no2. It's really excellent in fine sound:

Now into the Franck; and it's no less fine!

Morning listening is a return to this set:

[asin]B00TAJ730W[/asin]

Léon Berben plays on disc 5 the (reconstructed) "Niehoff" organ of the Eglise Saint-Jacques in Liege, Belgium, and a harpsichord by Keith Hill after Ruckers 1624. The reconstructed Renaissance organ is a splendid success to my ears! :)

Having this set and the one on NM Classics, I won't be jumping on the band wagon to buy the recent set in Glossa's Sweelinck Edition. That new set seems to share a number of performers  (and possibly recordings) with the NM Classics set (of which copies seem to refloat - check Amazon.de if interested)

The blurb on the Glossa set says "Recorded in various locations in the Netherlands and Germany between June 2012 and February 2014". I don't know if that helps?

Then it must be new recordings, because the NM recordings date all from 1999 - 2001. :)

Though the inclusion of recordings by Gustav Leonhardt in the Glossa set provides a mystery in light of the information they provide: he passed away in January 2012.... ::)

Nice that you get back to the Berben set, its in the line with me for the third rerun, but first I have to do Weinbergers Bach box, before getting to Sweelinck again, both Glossa and NM classics. An A-B comparison.

They probably mixed old and new recordings.

If you read the booklet instead of the backside blurb (I just checked) it states some exceptions "Leonhardt in 1971 and 2009". No other exceptions noted.

Good morning all,

Some more Beethoven Variations by Buchbinder (WoO 78-80 and Opp.34, 35 & 76), including some on "God Save the King" and "Rule Britannia".
