Now after no. 1 and no. 7, I'm on to no. 2! :)
My first Mahler 2, bought in the 70ies on LP!  ;)

The new erato

Some fun listening; music for violin and percussion orchestra. Interesting colors, and lots of syncopation.

And my first Mahler anything was Solti's No.1 - a secondhand cassette tape, circa 1989

Felix Weingartner - Symphony nr. 1:

Strauss and Mahler were conductors, and they wrote wonderful music, so why not Weingartner? Since JPC had the whole series on sale for 2,99€ I though - why not try?  I have not been disappointed so far.

The new erato

Very virtuosic, pretty dramatic, rhytmically vital, occasional flashes of Scriabin and Prokofiev:

Stunning playing by Hamelin, pretty clangy sound, very interesting but not particularly ingratiating. Disc 2 today, did the first yesterday.

What drew me in was the combination of Sara Mingardo, Gemma Bertagnoli and Andea Coen at the organ.
And of course I love Alessandro Scarlatti. It doesn't dissapoint so far! :)

Stravinsky
Symphony in three movements
Symphony of Psalms
Symphony in C
Rundfunkchor Berlin, BPO, Simon Rattle

I have avoided Stravinsky a bit over the years I've been listening to the classical music of the 20th century - I'm not sure quite why. I've been impressed by this disc of three neo-classical works recently.

It ranks as No. 32 in Peter Power Pop's survey of all available recordings: https://petersplanets.wordpress.com/

Turns out my one and only version is no.1  *high fives*

EDIT: Apparently I haven't listened to it for four years. Must fix that. But this is what I get for owning all this music and for wanting to listen in depth.

Now revisiting this classic:

For me, still one of the best Planets around.

Have you heard Levine's "Mars" or "Saturn" with the CSO?- the brass is positively 'Valhallan.'

Its definitely my battle standard.
Easier slayed than done. Is anyone shocked that I won?

Indeed! With such a name, I should have thought the flashes were from Mendelssohn and Schumann rather than Scriabin or Prokofiev.  :D

Now:

Listening to The Lark Ascending with Hugh Bean/Boult. Stunning performance.

Lovely.

And Boult's Serenade to Music on that disc is 'gaw-geous.'
Easier slayed than done. Is anyone shocked that I won?

Now:

Listening to Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47. Stupendous performance.

And Peter Power Pop's choices aren't my choices. I mean Dutoit's his No. 1 Planets and I have to say that performance didn't leave a last impression on me other than it was technically precise.

The Levine is pretty good, but Boult and Bernstein still reigns supreme for me.

Brahms 1 [Harnoncourt]....

The opening of this work is my favourite opening in any symphony. It is as though Brahms was boldly announcing an end to his years of procrastination and finally delivering his first symphony saying "There, I have finally done it. Here it is!" It was certainly worth the wait. I do love its fourth movement especially that haunting horn episode.
