A Debussy afternoon with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw. Fabulous performances in glorious analogue sound.

That´s what they sell in Romania. I suppose it isn´t that, because I never felt being transported by it. Actually, I find it rather banal.  :)

I don't think I've actually drunk any in decades (probably back when I was in Charlottesville).  I think it was largely a marketing gimmick with the gasketed cap :)

It´s not one of my favorites either. At the moment, my favorite beer is a Romanian one called Bergenbier --- I know, not a very Romanian-sounding name...  :)

Of foreign beers, the one I like the best is the India Pale Ale variety.

Beer or not, they do inhabit quite another world than Weingartner´s, but I wouldn´t want to trade one for the other.  :) Such superb music in both cases...

My beers of choice for a year or so have been I.P.A.'s:  Goose Island, and two new varieties of Samuel Adams—Rebel, and Rebel Rouser.

One of my favorite things in all the world is Zemlinsky's Symphony in B flat major, so yesterday when I saw Chailly's '87 outing with the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (London) I jumped faster than a pea in a frying pan.  Conlon has a better grasp of it, to be sure, but the slower speed of Chailly's Sostenuto and Allegro (hello, Riccardo!), Conlon: 12.07 vs. Chailly's 14.48, allows one to better discern and appreciate Z's powers of orchestration.  This work is a masterpiece of clever construction and repays many times over every close hearing one gives it.   Chailly's tempo transitions jolt and jar, but this disk offers a superb reading of Psalm 23, so no complaints, other than that to the susceptible it is highly addictive and I need to move on to something else before ODing on it.  Of course, I love the affectionate references to Brahms and Dvořák in the Symphony.

Fun Zemlinsky fact from the insert:

"Z's opus numbers...should be treated with caution : many of his works have no opus number, and some opus numbers have no works attached to them. [Z7 - but it gets better! :)] The designation Op. 14 is shared by Psalm 23 and by the incidental music to Shakespeare's Cymbeline..." (Andrew Huth)

I was talking about this wonderful brew!

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I will try to get my hand on it. How strong is it? Like 10 degrees or more?

Great! The strongest I´ve had was some Belgian beer whose name I can´t remember: 12. One 33 cl bottle made me feel like I had a full 75 cl wine bottle.  :)

The effect of the Canon is quite similar, be sure you will remember this beer till the end of your life. I drank three of those bottles in one go, and afterwards could not pronounce the word Beethoven anymore, it sounded more like faithhoover.

Ravishingly beautiful music. John (Mirror Image), you should definitely give Weingartner´s symphonies a try, if you haven´t already.

Embarrassingly enough, I have not heard a note of Weingartner's music. I see that CPO has all of his symphonies boxed up. May just have to pounce on the set at some point. Thanks for mentioning this, Andrei. I've heard the composer's name many times, but just never pursued any of the music.

You may always brows through all the reviews of the Symphonies he wrote and SQ on my blog, maybe that helps you a little to understand what you are getting into.
As far what CPO released I bought, and reviewed.

Sounds good, Harry. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

What are you drinking now? should be the name of this thread!  ;)  I no longer indulge (I was only ever a social drinker anyway) and I'm convinced it's not good for you, esp. oldsters, despite the "healthful effects" studies - there is a reason why Mormons live longer and I reckon it's not the constraints on their dancing!  However, when I did drink I was fond of a Trader Joe's brew, very inexpensive : Dunkelweizen , nicely complex, Belgian style, good cold or room temp and it had a slight bubblegum finish I enjoyed, though definitely not to everyone's taste.  Worth a tasting, in my (retired) opinion.

Edit:  and for the record, yeah, I do miss it!

You´re welcome. Given our exchange in the Tubin thread about the importance of melody, I am sure you would greatly enjoy his music.

Yes maybe you live longer, but you also miss a lot of fun in enjoying what is after all as long on the world as humans are

By the way, I wanted to tell you that I love your avatar. Enescu is a great composer, but I'm a bit confused by his style right now (I'm sure more exposure will help and more familiarity with it). I really ought to revisit his music at some juncture. My Enescu collection got larger as of last year. 8) Works that I do love are his three (finished) symphonies and the Orchestral Suite No. 3 "Villageoise". Great stuff.
