Fascinating.  I hadn't heard of this composer so I read the Wiki article on him, and went to find some of his music.

Thanks for posting this.

TD:

Hans Gal Piano Trio Op. 18

I started listening to his music in earnest yesterday - not counting the Gal we all know, which is his orchestrations of a couple of the Brahms Hungarian Dances. So far my favorites are the Violin Concertino, Cello Concerto, and solo piano music (I listened to the sonata, sonatinas, and piano suite; there are also 24 preludes & fugues, though the preludes and fugues were published separately).

Aside from the really amazing slow movement in No. 2, I'm not a big fan of the Hans Gal symphonies so far. Not as much as his concertos and solo piano music. 7 minutes into No. 3 (27 to go).

If I'm not misapprehending something (I jest, but it's entirely within the province of this composer's challenging MO to provoke questions about our aesthetic responses to his work), this could and should be a hit for our Karl.

Some Bach tonight:

I honestly cannot remember the last time I enjoyed the Goldberg Variations as much as I am with this recording, and the funny thing is I cannot say why. Perhaps I shouldn't think about it, and just savor the moment.  In any case, bravo, Bruno Canino:) :) :)

I was going to post that no 2 is pretty good and the rest borderline boring, but you beat me to it.

Add the Piano Concerto to your Gal-diet! It's a corker -- and very well coupled with the Mozart. (Which, in that case, I wouldn't skip.)

Kontrapunctus

I ordered this CD after reading about it on this forum. I listened to Symphony No.2 today--my, what a dark and intense work. Those who like Schoenberg's tonal period would probably enjoy it. (It's even angstier.) Good but a little bright sound.
