I bought just partially this cycle: the part dedicated to the vocal music. It was a mixed experience because I was probably waiting for performances a bit darker and intimate...

P.S.: I like Koopman conducting the Bach cantatas.  :)

Hmm, darker and intimate seems ideal in this type of vocal music. I have really enjoyed the Ricercar Consort recording of a few of the Buxtehude cantatas. Is that what you mean with "darker and intimate"? Do you have specific Buxtehude recordings that fall into this realm, Gordo? I have sampled the Koopman Buxtehude cycle (I have a couple of the releases) and thought it was very good overall (but not like Ricercar C). I never really expect full cycles/collections to be stellar...

Fell off the wagon a little bit.  30 discs, 50 dollars.  Wonderful sampler.

Seems like a great compilation! It is tempting, but there are way too many overlaps with other Sony releases. DG and Sony seem to be doing a lot of boxes with the same recordings. Grrrr...

You have hit the nail on the head; that's exactly what I mean. The Ricercar Consort are a true model in this repertoire.

I also like the "Purcell Quartet" on Chandos, performing some sacred cantatas (2 vols.); two excellent volumes of Buxtehude's vocal music on Naxos (especially the first of them with Kirkby and a dream team of instrumentalists); a superb "Membra Jesu Nostri" conducted by Jörg Breiding on Rondeau (alert: chorus of brats) and some others...  :)

Hah! The Wood-Nymph recording is just fantastic. I'm not sure about that SQ recording. Davis' Sibelius has never been much to my liking, but I hope you enjoy his performances more than I did.

Decided to fetch this one in.

I listened to some of this Wood Nymph disc the other night, that along with Swanwhite. Both very nice works and an equally nice recording, I'm excited to get a full run through. Any other works similar to these you would recommend?

I've been enjoying Davis' rendition on a few of the symphonies, especially the 5th & 6th from the LSO Live series. And I love the way he handles the final movement of the 3rd symphony. It's very different approach from the other recordings I've heard or own, but also a great way to explore the various tones and emotions of Sibelius' music.

Do you know King Kristian II, Pelleas and Melisande, Belshazzar's Feast, or The Tempest? I highly recommend these works. Preferably the Vanska recordings. You may be interested in the Theatre Music set from the Sibelius Edition on BIS. Great music and an affordable way to own all of these works under one roof so to speak.

If I were forced to choose a Davis cycle, it would be his BSO one on Philips. I do seem to recall he had a great approach to the 3rd, but, as with anything, it's all subjective. As I've mentioned many times, I prefer the Finns in Sibelius with a few notable exceptions.

There will be fewer in future, with Jeffrey's new purchase.

I don't know as I think Greg's purchase of The Wood-Nymph deserves a table demolition with an axe. 8) Such an incredible work and the other works on that recording are table-smashing worthy as well: A Lonely Ski-Trail and the complete Swanwhite.

Very nice, erato! Great recordings. I've really enjoyed Oramo's Nielsen series (much more than Gilbert's).
