What do think of the elderly Andriessen's music, erato? Is it worth pursuing?

The new erato

Yes, after trying volume 1 I find it very worhwhile. Lover of Swedish and British neoclassicists will just gobble this up.

aligreto

I bought this one for the Brahms Alto Rhapsody, Brigitte Fassbaender singing....

Some Spanish stuff from amazon.es;

I seem to remember this was recommended by Que

And finally a non Spanish disc just because it was really inexpensive and I am particularly interested in quartets:

I have heard little by Bruch (except for that concerto and Kol Nidrei) that strikes me than more than well-written and pleasant, but at the price, well worth a try.

There is a disc with (mostly late, composed in the early 20th century but he hardly changed his style since the 1860s) chamber music on cpo with an ensemble led by Ulf Hoelscher, including an octet and a piano quintet which is a very pleasant surprise. I'd say as good as the famous violin concerto. I highly recommend it (but I have not heard the string quartets). edit: It's 7,99 at jpc "Streichoktett (1920)"

Duly noted. If it is cheap on jpc, it will advance in the queue. Thanks!

I don't know that recording, but rather this older one--long OOP-- from Trieste:

Il Campiello is an utterly delightul opera, full of nostalgia...the final scene for the soprano, "Cara la mia Venezia...Bondì Venezia cara" is really touching (and it reuses a haunting theme that already appears in the overture and the light-hearted Act 3 ritornello)... Enjoy!

Is this a good set? Ritters review caused my purchasing finger to develop a twitch.....

Here's the overture form a perfomance in Japan...

...and that final scene I was talking about (form the Ricordi set, the Bongiovanni AFAIK having just now been issued):

André

You will love the Vainberg ballet !

Just purchased:

Schubert's 9th symphony by the Tbilisi (Georgia) Symphony under Djansug Kakhidze. I love this team's Tchaikovsky 4-6 as well as their Beethoven 9. An orchestra that still has a highly individual 'soviet' sound.

Very nice, Andre. I'm embarrassed that I only know Ballet Suite No. 4 from The Golden Key (via a Chandos recording). It will be nice to get acquainted with more of this music.

The new erato

You must be the only person on earth embarassed by not knowing absolutely ALL of Weinberg's ballet suites!

Shame on absolutely all of the earths population, I say!!!

André

I need another Carmen like I need a hole in the head, but hey! This looks good and the price is right:
