I swear this is my last music purchase for the year. Mark it in your calendars, folks!

I already own HvK's 80s Beethoven cycle, so I figured might as well get his 60s one as well.

Also bought:

I'm sure Sarge will be pounding the table. ;D

It will be interesting to read how you get on with the comparison there as many believe the 60's version to be his best.

I am but a small item in this thread, ordering only one, or rather a twofar digipack, compared to the likes of MI, or Jeffrey, when he gets drive, but at least I will be able to listen to all those piles of CD'S in my listening room....they gather dust, even items older than 5 years, still waiting....shame on me, right?

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

No shame there at all Harry. I too was as compulsive as our colleagues above at one time but, like you I ended up with a collection of "unlistened to" CDs that was almost as big as my collection on the shelf. I curtail my purchases much more now buying perhaps an average of a max. of one per day; this spacing at least gives me an opportunity to hear what I have purchased relatively quickly.

I can resist everything, except temptation (Wilde, quoted from memory, so the wording might have been slightly different).

A few days ago I got three discs from the BIS summer sale: Gade's symphonies 3+4 and 2 Vols. of the CPE Bach keyboard concerti. So I cannot resist either but I am not splurging in the way some others are. Having already a lot of CDs and being kind of broke helps...

You must buy more stuff than all other members combined. How does it feel to own cds knowing you will never listen to in your lifetime?

Seriously, you don't have the Szell set ??? Where have you been the last 20 yrs?

Yes, I've read so many reviewers state that HvK's 60s cycle was the best one. I certainly won't refute their point just yet as I listened to the Pastoral early this morning from this cycle and it was AMAZING!

No! Never shame on you! You're a collector, my friend, but, at the end of the day, like all of us, you have a passionate love affair with this music and we all can't help but feel the same urges you feel. We all like different composers, time periods more, etc., but our love for this music will never die. If anything, it only gets stronger by the hours, days, weeks, years. Never be ashamed for 'having too much'. The idea is to have options and when you can pull from a large collection almost anything you want to hear that's always a privilege and one that I'm extremely fortunate to have as I'm sure you feel the same way.

For me, it's about having options available so you can listen to almost anything you want at any given time. Plus, I like to collect music from my favorite composers. As for where have I been in the last 20 years, for starters I wasn't even into classical music 20 years. I was listening to jazz and rock music exclusively. I didn't get seriously into classical until the past 7 years or so. Plus, I'm very much a person that doesn't follow trends or keep up with what's popular (even in classical music). I've stuck to my own likes and I have to say I've done pretty good by finding the right composers for me. This, of course, leads to having blindspots, but I'm not worried about it. I'm not in some kind of competition or anything where I have to prove how much I know about this music. All I know and all that matters is I love the music. That will always be enough.

I used to buy a lot of cds. Now not so much as almost everything I can stream on Youtube.
Having too many cds is like a woman having too many pairs of shoes: sometimes I stand in front of my 3000 (or maybe it is 5000+) cds and can't decide which one I want to listen to...

Though I have to admit, that in my time, also on GMG at that time, I bought triple the amount of CD'S as MI does now, so I was as bad as he was, but getting older and wiser, I started for a change listening to CD'S I bought in 2007-2008. Blimey :o

I'm getting to the point where I'd like to just cut way back and be able to cut down to maybe 3-4 purchases a year. I believe I can do this, it's just going to take a mind set on it and I think I've reached that point, because, upon reviewing my recent purchases, I really bought too much. I really did. Do I regret it? Hell no! But should I slow down? Absolutely! :)

I remember the days when Harry was buying CDs every day and the hardest-working woman in the postal service was leaving 2-3 packages of JPC orders on his doorstep each afternoon!

As you know, except in the event of a crazy/ridiculous bargain or an extremely rare item, I buy a huge, huge order of CDs in the first week of January, then nothing for 51 weeks. Six months on, am still enjoying getting to know some of the 2016 treats. There are a few I've heard 4-5 times already (like András Schiff's Janacek CD on ECM) but others that still are waiting for their first listen. The pace suits me now. And, looking ahead to 2017, my annual budget is about $700 but my current 2017 shopping list contains only $500 of stuff. Usually I have the opposite problem - trying to decide what can wait for the year after.

I should take up your example and I'm not going to buy any CDs until next year. I like your idea of buying one large order and then not buying anything for half the year or even the rest of the year. I'm going to try this. Wish me luck!
