German Amazon, the V-L was going for a steal, figured the Holmboe would make for an interesting comparison...

I'll need to tweak folder names on the flash drive to make such a thing efficient, but I think it a capital idea, Rafael.

Good day to you, Karll!

I'm still dubitative about getting the Villa-Lobos SQs. I've always had mixed feelings about that composer (I enjoy some of his works immensely, but get the shivers everytime I think of of works such as Descobrmento do Brasil or Floresta do Amazonas  >:( ). And I remember someone here on GMG finding the SQs downright dreadful...

Oh!  Well, when I made my initial survey of the quartets (and it is high time I went back to them) I found them of very high quality.  Which is why I made a point of adding them to my 128-gb flash drive for access while driving  8)

Villa-Lobos
String Quartets

Vagn Holmboe
String Quartets

What a great haul!!! These quartets -- especially the Villa-Lobos quartets -- are tremendous works. You might find, upon listening to them, that they elevate Villa-Lobos to the realm of the elite few string quartet composers of the 20th century, right alongside DSCH, Bartok, and Weinberg.

Holmboe is a more terse, densely argued kind of game; 'difficult' fare but worth the effort I find it takes to get the most out of this music. (Especially if you know and love his symphonies, which are relatively more easily accessible than symphonies always are, compared to string quartets.

There really is no reason for dubitation, Ritter! These are stunning works; arguably the best of Villa-Lobos and certainly worth anyone's time to explore. Nothing second-rate about 'em.
If I may quote from Surprised by Beauty: "And anyone who thinks of Villa-Lobos as a second-rate Stravinsky of the jungle or an aimless note-spinner has yet to encounter his 17 string quartets. Villa-Lobos was a self-confessed "string quartet addict" and wrote these works throughout his career. It is ironic that, like Shostakovich's quartets, they were among the last part of his work to be recorded, though they contain some of his finest music."

Cheers, Jens! Now, I do still need the Weinberg...  >:D

Les voyages de l'Amour
Ensemble Meridiana / Chandos

Works by Boismortier, Rebel, and Corrette.

I'm trying to flush out my collection of French Baroque, and trying to get around the (stately, restrained, dull) monoculture that was Lully. This music seems a little more lively than some.

Spineur

This is a 6 episodes TV serie on Mozart dating from the mid-eighties with an impressive cast (Michel Bouquet, Michel Aumont, Arielle Dombasle and J-C Brialy).  It has been OOP for a while but I manage to get a copy on Priceminister/Rakuten/

The Masque of Moments
Theatre of the Ayre
Linn Records

This album just came out last week (Feb 24th), so I don't see any reviews yet.

But I highly recommend this album to everyone!

I am really stunned at how good this is!  Who knew that English early Baroque music could sound so interesting and lively!?

Good day, John! You might want to reconsider that order. You should already have that Stravinsky film as a bonus DVD in the big "Columbia Album Collection" you purchased recently IIRC.
