Interesting and thank you for that  :)

You're welcome.
Kunstformen der Natur was influential in early 20th-century art, architecture, and design, bridging the gap between science and art. In particular, many artists associated with Art Nouveau were influenced by Haeckel's images, including René Binet, Karl Blossfeldt, Hans Christiansen, and Émile Gallé. One prominent example is the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage (Wiki).

Should arrive later this week

Thank you very much for posting this, being a big fan of Bidú Sayão and owning and and admiring her recording as a young woman (dare I say she not only sounded but also looked absolutely beautiful?  8)):

Hey Que, I know next to nothing about Sayão, but from the way you talk, looks like I'm in for a gorgeous performance from her. :)

Just bought this quite OOP recording:

This is Ken B's fault

He posted a CD in the Concerts thread.  Checking it out, I realized this was now available. Ergal, it's Ken's fault 😈

Bidù Sayão was a soprano who was totally out of the ordinary. Not a huge voice, but one that (from eyewitness reports) had an uncanny ability to "travel" in the theatre, and (from what one hears on records), had a beautiful, girlish tone. Her diction in French, Italian and, of course, Portuguese (she was from Rio de Janeiro) was perfect. And her phrasing is always immaculate.

I'm sure you know her recording of the Aria (Cantilena) from the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 under the composer (you have to hear her humming just before the final reappeerance of the initial theme to believe it!), and I'd say that her recording of Debussy's La damoiselle élue (under Ormandy) is one of the most touching vocal recordings I have ever heard (only Dawn Upshaw under Salonen comes anywhere close IMHO) And although I know it's not a repertoire you're that fond of, John, you should listen to her recordings of Susanna's (from The Marriage of Figaro) and Zerlina's (from Don Giovanni) arias. Her "Batti, batti, o bel Masetto" is sooooo beautiful!

She passed away aged 97 in Maine in 1999, and was regarded as a national treasure in Brazil.

Thanks for all the information, Rafael. Who needs Wikipedia, when I have you! ;) ;D

Bought this for the Ives:

If any Ives fans here hasn't heard Stokowski's performances of Symphony No. 4 or the Robert Browning Overture, I urge them to give this recording a spin:

Very good.

I remember when I started my journey with Noseda last year Karl you gave me some encouragement at the time which ultimately paid off  :)

Well, I've come full circle, it appears.  This was one of the first CDs I bought, decades ago in Buffalo.  (I cannot be sure, but we will not err wildly, if at all, by saying it is one of the first 25 CDs I ever bought.)  I'm not saying I was actually displeased with the disc then . . . and while I was in Tallinn and Petersburg, all my CDs were in storage stateside.  And on returning to the states, there was an emergency need, so I sold all my LPs and CDs to a used shop on Mass. Ave, in Cambridge.  And, well, upon the encouragement of some of the esteemed company here, I've now fetched in a used copy, which has just landed.

My roommate in college was a big Kyung Wha Chung fan and had quite a few of her CDs back in the mid 1990s. Her performances always struck me as being very alive and full of energy as if she is one with the music without resorting to cheap histrionics. Her tone can be rather rough at times but they in no way degrade from her performances.

This one has been on my List for some time but now I own it....
