You did it

I've loved Stradella's Sinfonias for ages. It's funny that we're now in the age of making operas about other composers

Mandryka writes, "Ah, I'm glad you haven't disappeared, I was thinking about our Josquin motets project just yesterday!

Pasotti/ La Fonte Musica has another one which I also enjoyed, called Le Ray au Soleyl."

I'm game to continue our Josquin listening project here.  Though I don't know if I can start a thread on GMG yet, being a "Newbie"?  Any sign of Rick?

I'll look into Le Ray au Soleyl, thanks.

I didn't care for Beauty Farm's CD of Ockeghem Masses either.  Though friends tell me the two Gombert discs are a different story.  For fans of the Franco-Flemish polyphony, the Bauldeweyn (or Balduin or Bauldwijn) Masses are an essential purchase, regardless, as some works by Bauldeweyn have been misattributed to Josquin, so he must be a very fine composer.  & I don't recall that his music has ever been recorded before.

Todd McComb recently discussed Beauty Farm's latest CD in his "Remarks on Recent Recordings" section at Medieval.org:

http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/cds/remarks.html

King ubu—I'm glad to hear you enjoyed those two CDs.  Bilson's long been a favorite of mine in Mozart's Piano Sonatas.

I will be interested to hear your opinion of this one.  Received a bad review from a trusted source on Amazon.

Will do...

Hi Roasted,

Good to see you are still of the same opinion regarding Bostock! Are you only lurking around this forum or have you ventured elsewhere.

Kind regards,
Malx.

Thread comment last couple of buys have been boxed sets:

The Holmboe is, like most things Holmboe, excellent.

Oh wow, that is fantastic. You must be looking forward to his new opera. Unfortunately I haven't seen any of them yet, but I really enjoy his operas, particularly Da gelo a gelo (which I think is a bit overshadowed by Luci mie traditrici)—do you know it?

No, I don't. Has it been 'officially' recorded?
I'm a bit allergic to You Tube (unfortunately for me, I'd say)

The CDs look interesting, for sure .... but my piles are that high (and they do include some Sciarrino, too)

Nothing new under the sun  ;). Sciarrino was beat to this subject matter almost 180 years ago by Friedrich von Flotow:

And then, of course, there's Pfitzner's Palestrina.

There are other operas on Stradella ... I was aware of César Franck's (1841) but not of Louis Niedermeyer's (1837 - never even heard Niedermeyer's name before ...)

Unfortunately I don't think it has......the only place I have heard it was on youtube. :-\

Hoping for a CD recording someday! But here it is anyway for anyone interested:

Hi Malx,

For some reason the dull hand of Bostock's competence really annoys me!  Now Holmboe is quite a different matter - what an excellent composer.

Forum-wise I'm not really watching/contributing anywhere at the moment - I still find the format here hard to follow a single thread with much ease (I find all the re-quoting of the previous contribution a pain!) - best wishes
RS

Just bought:

Bought this recording of Stravinsky's Le sacre for $4 (incl. shipping) as I had a promotional credit from Amazon.

A new acquisition, actually a gift from a Swiss friend, well known here in GMG...  :D

I must admit I've never heard of him or his music...but a quick search told me that he is "a contemporary Swiss composer of classical music, known for applying electronic music techniques to his productions" (Wiki).
Very promising, I'd say.

Me being a long-standing fan of Wagner and an admirer of the art of Maria Callas (as well as of that of Vittorio Gui), this Parsifal had to be in my collection (found at an attractive price in a department store here in Madrid):

I actually owned excerpts of this already abridged  performance  (all of Callas's interventions) on LPs on the HRE label (but my LP collection stayed on the other side of the Atlantic 30 years ago). I suppose the sound will have improved in this "first official release" of the recording.

I've heard none of them but Rimsky-Korsakov's one acter Mozart and Salieri has a few recordings and at least one YouTube performance.

Met a shady Mr. Jessop on screen in the movies a few days ago  ("The Fearmajers", Jacques Tourneur, USA, 1958) ... obviously had to think of you  ;)

Most recent orders:

Not that I need any more recordings of Mozart's piano concertos (but I did stay away from the big Serkin box and will continue to do so) ... or the Requiem for that  ;D
