No doubt, it was a careful selection, Pat.

I own the highlighted discs and all of them go from simply superb (Bach, Locatelli & Schumann) to very good.  :)

From that list the Bach gamba sonatas is still super cheap in the US, just saying... 8)

I have a double CD of Davis conducting the Fantastique, Harold en Italie and the Grand Symphonie Fun. et. Triomph, but none of the rest--and in fact,  outside Enfance du Christ and Nuits d'Ete I have either on recordings or only one recording of the other works,  so it's a good catchall box for me.

So how did you choose between the Philips/Decca box vs the LSO box?

The Decca/Philips box has the oratorios, and the LSO box has the operas.

Oh that's simple enough.

Actually, it was even simpler than that.  Arkivmusic put the Decca box in its Weekend Specials.  And based on what I have of the LSO recordings (Benvenuto Cellini and Damnation of Faust), and what I used to have of Davis's Philips opera recordings (meaning Les Troyens) back when I had a small library of operas on LP, I would expect much better performances from the older series than the new series.

Thread duty:
Discovered that Martha has a new boyfriend.   Much younger than Nelson Friere, too, although personally I think Friere is far more handsome.

ETA: Contents are, with the possible exception of the Milhaud, already recorded by Argerich with other performers:  Mozart Sonata for two pianos, Shostakovich Concertino, Rachmaninov Suite No. 1, Milhaud Scaramouche, Ravel La Valse.

How did the missus like it?

She hasn't heard it yet. We got a new TV today after being without for a week. Rather than listening to music before bed (as is her wont) she spent the evening catching up on a few shows.

Uh, John, looks like you already bought the disc with Symphony no. 8 (found this post of yours in the "Past Purchases" thread):

"I bought some more (gulp) Schnittke but I have heard these Chandos recordings are much better performed than the BIS recordings":

You better start keeping track of your purchases! :D

Actually to relieve the humor....

I had originally gave away most of my Schnittke recordings to Monkey Greg, but I ended up loving Schnittke's music and so I ended up re-purchasing many of the recordings that I gave away.

Well, it took me quite some time to appreciate his music and when I gave it away, I was very much adamant in my stance that he wasn't a composer for me. But, like life itself, opinions and biases can change and they certainly did with me and Schnittke.

Bought these today...

I already own these performances of Symphonies 0 & 8 in the BIS set, but I bought these recordings for the fillers: Nagasaki, For Liverpool, and Symphonic Prelude. All three of these works do not appear on any other recording, therefore making them mandatory purchases for a Schnittke-head like me.

Also bought:
