A new release from Chandos, Barry Douglas playing Mussorgsky Pictures and Tchaikovsky Seasons. I bought it as a lossless download, the CD is available next month.

I remember seeing Douglas playing the Mussorgsky at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, Moscow on television. The Great Gate of Kiev was titanic and he was pouring with sweat - partly I suspect because of the tv lights but also the colossal effort he put into the work.

That's the one Vandermolen and me were also referring at; starting the Kokkonen series - but still the best of that series (in my ears).

Nice program.
+1
It seems it's just Silvestrov's Bagatellen I & II in the program, with the Debussy Arabesque between the two.
An excerpt from Mompou's Musica callada would have been a cool addition to the program..  8)

My Kokkonen discs are the BIS of symphony 3, opus sonorum and Requiem, and the 2 disc set on Finlandia. I have had trouble going further because what I was interested in was either too expensive or implied duplication. I will now have twice the symphony no 3 and twice the cello concerto. But since the 4th symphony is what I'm really interested in, this seemed to be the best I could do - especially for 2.57£  :)

In the Top 10 Nordic Works thread I had named the 3rd symphony on my list. I have high hopes for no 4  :)

You are correct: only two of the Bagatellen on the CD: op. 1/1 and op. 1/2.

Apropos of nothing, I noticed that the release of Symphonies 3 and 4 from Ondine that Vandermolen liked so well seems to be unavailable in the US, but I noticed it can be downloaded (mp3 or FLAC lossless) at presto classical. I'm thinking of downloading Symphony No 4 from that release, since the other pieces (Symphony No 3 and the Cello Concerto) are already in my collection.

Now that I'm listening almost exclusively to FLAC files streamed to my CD player from the computer, I've discovered the cost-saving benefit of being able to download individual works from a release with a lot of unattractive fillers.

There is also a box with the Sixteen,I think I go for  the Choir of Christ Church.

I have also collected The Sixteen albums individually. Both series are wonderful but I also marginally prefer Christ Church.
