Volondat's appearance at the 1983 Queen Elisabeth competition was an extraordinary event. His behaviour was ...unusual. I spoke to him a couple of years ago, in Brussels. He's teaching and occasionally gives concerts. I remember that he hoped to record Bartok 2 and Prokofiev 5. His Fauré cd's are very good. I know that he is also a composer. A lovely and warm human being.

In a way, he reminds me of John Ogdon.

It certainly was unusual, only the way he walked to the piano... :)

Thanks, bought the Kuhnau because of your recommendation.  :)
Will check out the Cirri and report.

And I bought a whole boxset with your picture on it!  :D

Yes and they did not pay copyright, can you imagine? Well in real life I look like that, so you know
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

I can only talk about the visionary Rautavaara's 8th Symphony. It's very worth your time. An excellent score of late 20th Century (finished in 1999 IIRC).
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

The vinyl rumbling and scratching of Birtwistle's "Fields of Sorrow" on archive.org is getting to me through headphones so I've had to order a CD copy.

That's tempting, as the only Furtwangler Wagner I have are various orchestral excerpts.   The box says it's still  the 1990 remaster though... the tech geek in me would have been interested to hear what they could do using today's technology.  Though as I said I haven't heard it, so the 1990 remaster may be great for all I know -- I'd be curious to hear what you think of it.

Cheers - I'll let you know what I think of the item (especially the Sound Quality). :)

Thanks. I will start there. The Harp Concerto looks fairly interesting too.

Be sure to listen to Cantus arcticus soon too. Really all the concertos seemed good to me, and not too hard to get into, but the use of birdsong in Cantus is really special. This reminds me though, I should listen to the symphonies, I've only heard one or two from the Ondine set so far..

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Rautavaara. After awhile, all of his music starts to run together and you can't really tell what work is what. I think he's a one-dimensional composer and does one thing really, really well and that is atmosphere. I do recall enjoying his Violin Concerto when I first heard it and the 7th symphony, but little else has reached me.

Just bought a Japanese 2017 SHM-CD of this definitive performance:

The review I read of this recording says that it is the best audio quality he's heard. Pretty excited to hear it as I love this work.

Not a music purchase per se, but I needed an opera reference guide, so I bought this book:

Had my eye on this item for a few years - hopefully there will be no problems with the order... :)

I don't listen to Wagner much, but when I do, I always reach for one of HvK's recordings. His Ring cycle remains, for me, one of the most incredible musical experiences of my life. One summer I listened to HvK's Ring in its' entirety and I believe I listened to his Parsifal as well. I don't own that particular set you bought, but this one:

Thanks - Yes, I enjoy HvK's Opera recordings a lot and thought his Ring Cycle would probably be pretty good. :)

Oh, it's better than pretty good. Pretty good applies to Böhm and Solti. ;) HvK and the Berliners are phenomenal in Wagner, but you'll hopefully find this out soon enough.

And finally a FLAC download as CD copies are ridiculously expensive.
