I have the Atlantida CD which I recall enjoying. Must listen to it again.

Great stuff, John! I don't know Requejo's CD of Falla (got his Albéniz Iberia not that long ago, and enjoyed it), but Atlántida is one of my favourite works ever (flaws and all). Some of my thoughts on the available recordings can be read here. I'd love to know what you think of it...

Thanks, gents. Rafael, it was this post (the one kindly linked) that made me become aware of Atlántida. In deciding what recording to buy, I went with my gut and picked the EMI recording as I enjoyed La vida breve (with Victoria de los Angeles) last night.

I remember taking the boxed LP set of Atlantida out of the record library many, many years ago:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Added this to my existing Falla order:

For purely sentimental reasons, as I saw Fernando Previtali conduct Turandot in Caracas more than 40 years ago (the second opera performance I ever attended):

Evening, Rafael. Do you own the Falla recording of songs I purchased from above? It seems finding recordings of just his songs is a tough pursuit. The audio samples sounded quite good for this particular song recital.

Good evening, John. No, I don't have that recital, and only know the Siete canciones populares españolas and (not included in that disc, as it is not with piano accompaniment) Psyché. Looks interesting, for sure (even if early Falla—pre-1906 or so—is usually not IMHO anywhere close in quality to his mature output). But I might explore that disc.

Bought a lot of inexpensive Cage (and one Feldman) cutout recordings from Berkshire Record Outlet. Granted, some of these might turn out to be lemons, but quite a few number pieces are included.

Well, I'm interested in hearing his earlier works whether they're of good quality or not --- I'll let my own ears decide this. :)

I bought this recording and was hoping for a real grandiose masterpiece....but the magic didn't happen.

This turned out to be, for me,  the real highlight: "Al apuntar el alba clara de una paloma he soñado"

Too late! :)

Enjoy the Hahn. There was lots of discussion about the Brahms, but I enjoy that Hahn disc a lot.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Truly lovely aria, this "Isabella's Dream", and beautifully sung by Ofelia Sala in the video.

But do give Atlántida another try, Peter. It has some magnificent sections...I am particularly fond of the second part, "Alcides and Gerion the Three-Headed" (which apparently is more E. Halffter than Falla, but anyway....)

Hey!  You order that Susan Graham/Hahn CD!  Looking forward to hearing what you think of it...and also of that Janacek/Kodaly album [as noted in that piano thread, I'm looking for some good contemporary pianists re Janacek.   :)  Curious as to what Kodaly pieces she is playing too?
