Some charity shop purchases today. I go for what catches my eye so without rhyme or reason.

On LP:
Lennox Berkeley, An 80th Birthday Tribute by the Nash Ensemble on Hyperion.

Haydn, String Quartets Op. 54 1 & 2 Orlando Quartet on Philips.

Bloch, Suite for Viola and Orchestra, Milton Katims and "Schelomo" Laszlo Varga on Turnabout.

On CD:
Bruckner, 7th Symphony, Karajan and BPO on DG.

Schnittke, Piano Quintet/String Trio with 1999 AFCM Ensemble (sic) including Irina Schnittke (piano) and Mark Lubotsky (violin). A new Naxos CD still in shrink wrap.

Walton, 1st Symphony & Belshazzar's Feast. Adrian Boult with LPO on Nixa. There has been some discussion on the Walton thread of this recording. I have the LP which is far from being a pristine copy.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Nice haul! I especially like those Borodin recordings of the Shostakovich's SQs. Great stuff. Of course, the Barber is self-recommending. Alsop understands this composer incredibly well and the performances, especially the purely orchestral works are top-notch (the concerti in this set have been bettered elsewhere and this is because of the wider range of soloists that have recorded these works through the years).

Ooh! That Russian chamber music set looks interesting!  What label is it on and who are doing the performances?  Or is it all varied?  How big of a set is it too?  :)  And that Borodin set too!  When are the recordings on that one from?

Looks like lots of fun exploring for you Irons!  :)

I picked up a few things myself today:

On CD:

I recently heard a recording of him playing No. 2 and just happened to run across this CD.  It's Leon Fleischer, Cleveland Orchestra with George Szell

and....

a Franck and D'Indy one with Thibaudet, Dutoit and Montréal.

On LP:

Bach's Violin Concertos  BWV 1041 and 1042 on DG with David and Igor Oistrakh and

a boxed set of Bach's 6 sonatas and partitas for solo violin with Heinryk Szeryng also on DG.

Best,

PD

The 1st "Russian Chamber Music" box is a 25CD set from Brilliant Classics - I think most of the recordings are for the label except the Tchaikovsky SQ's which could be a license from Warner (but I'm not sure)...
The contents are as follows:

The 2nd "Russian Chamber Music" box (with Borodin Quartet) is a license of recordings originally on Melodiya label (I think) - contents:

The Borodin Quartet set seems to be a collection of recordings originally issued on Teldec and, in the case of some of the Shostakovich quartets, EMI / Virgin.

[This was one of the first DSCH recordings I got. I think it's excellent.]
The booklet says it was recorded in England in the early 90s.

Hey Jeffrey - I thought the Box might be Re-Issues of these recordings:

The Tchaikovsky set has a Melodiya insignia in the top right hand corner, so does this single issue from the above Shostakovich set:

That's my evidence anyway - I don't really know where the recordings originate from to be honest though... :)

That Glazunov CD is licensed from Naxos. Intriguing box set, I am curious about the amount of rarities like Roslavets and Catoire.

Re Borodin Quartet
They recorded several things more than once. The lilac covered set is (I presume) the same recordings in this set (including the quintet with Richter)

As far as Tchaikovsky there's this from Teldec, with different partners in Souvenir de Florence.

I suspect that's the one in this budget set.

Is Yury Yurov the Russian equivalent of John Johnson? (Well, literally George Georgeson)

My favorite example of such a name is the composer Sveinbjørn Sveinbjørnsson.

Since Warner already had the Teldec label and later took over EMI, for the Borodin Qt set it could have been either the earlier
Tchaikovsky recordings for EMI or the later ones made for Teldec.

This picture reveals they picked the Teldec, which is a bloody shame since the EMI recordings are much nicer than the stylistically abrasive and technically less secure Teldec remake:

Thanks for solving the mystery for us - I already own the Teldec Set of the Tchaikovsky Quartets and was hoping for the Melodiya ones to be included so bummer... I will give the old duplicate to charity I guess.
I don't think there's actually anything wrong with the Teldec recordings though - I quite like them... :)

Just wait until you hear the EMI/Melodiya.....   :)

Sound quality of those is of course nothing like the later Teldec, undoubtedly the reason why Warner picked those recordings.

I'd like to hear them at some stage :) - Spotify seems to have deleted all their Melodiya recordings a couple of months back (as far as I can tell)... :'(

I think you should try the Norwegian Ole Olsen.
