Is Yury Yurov the Russian equivalent of John Johnson? (Well, literally George Georgeson)

My favorite example of such a name is the composer Sveinbjørn Sveinbjørnsson.
I think you should try the Norwegian Ole Olsen.

I always liked the German choral conductor Jürgen Jürgens.

The 1st "Russian Chamber Music" box is a 25CD set from Brilliant Classics - I think most of the recordings are for the label except the Tchaikovsky SQ's which could be a license from Warner (but I'm not sure)...
The contents are as follows:

The 2nd "Russian Chamber Music" box (with Borodin Quartet) is a license of recordings originally on Melodiya label (I think) - contents:

US,

Looks like I opened Pandora's Box by asking those questions!  Thanks everyone!  Looking forward to your reviews of the recordings.

Well Fergus, you wouldn't think that if, like me, you'd bought a second-hand LP supposedly featuring Vaughan Williams's 'Dona Nobis Pacem' (a work that I always wanted to hear) from a specialist second-hand record shop in Manchester c. 1985 and had jumped on a train back to London and had decided to check the condition of the LP only to find that, instead of featuring Vaughan Williams's music, it featured THE TROUT QUINTET by Schubert, mistakenly put into the LP sleeve. I had to take a flying leap off the train as it was about to leave the station in order to return to the record shop  >:D >:D.
This forever coloured my attitude to the Schubert work.  ;D

All for the love of music (particularly Vaughan Williams')!  Way to go Jeffrey!  Though I do hope that it wasn't really a flying leap?!  :o ???

Just a few months ago I bought a used copy of the Wanderer Fantasy from the Amazon marketplace. When it arrived the package contained the Trout Quintet. I got a refund and was allowed to keep the Trout though I didn't really want it and still haven't listened to it.

You two are reminding me to double-check things that I buy used.  One place has regular sales (for either one or two dollars) and has a ton of CDs, DVDs, etc.  I always check the condition of the CDs, but should double-check to make sure that it also has the correct CD(s) in it.   ::)  I did once catch a switched CD (at a different store).  I remember that it was of La Traviata and a version that I wanted; one CD was the correct one and I forget what the second one was, but it certainly wasn't by Verdi!

Serves you right for preferring to buy some second rate composer or other over Schubert. There is a message there for you Jeffrey  ;D

I just bought Adrian Boult's EMI GROC CD w/ Holst's Planets and Elgar's Enigma Variations, and the disc inside was totally different, Nathan Milstein's Beethoven & Brahms concertos w/ Steinberg/Pittsburgh. I listened to it and it's pretty good, but not what I ordered...  :-X In the end I got a refund and got to keep the CD. The big eBay sellers don't really care to get their merchandise back, I guess they'd rather just swallow the loss and keep my business.  ;D

Three discs of Louis Thiry's recordings of Olivier Messiaen organ music for under $11  :o  Please, someone else take advantage of this killer deal before it's gone. I have Traverso to thank for putting me onto this music, so if you're reading this, thank you!  :)

David Hurwitz may be a [fill in the blank], but his enthusiastic advocacy of the recordings of Maurice Abravanel led me to order these sets (found cheap, and all at risk of going OOP any moment now, I'm afraid):

[asin]B004TB6GEA[/asin]
I really don't need another Mahler cycle, but listened to the finale of the Fourth in Abravanel's recording on YouTube, and was completely won over by Nethania Davrath's wonderful singing. IIRC, this Mahler Fourth is our fellow GMGer Jo498's favourite recording of the work.

[asin]B0000023D3[/asin]
I've come to appreciate Honegger's Le Roi David more and more over the years, and the distinguished lineup of soloists and reciters made this particularly appealing.

[asin]B0007IA56Y[/asin]
Not that I am Satie's greatest fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the Hurwitzer made a compelling case for these recordings.

The only Abravanel CD in my collection so far is the fantastic Varèse + Honegger program, also on Vanguard (and also praised in Hurwitz's tribute).

Shortly after posting this the price went back up to almost $30. Still a good deal.

Sure Jeffrey. From the long samples I have been listening to, I am thrilled by his sound world.  More over my wife loves it too. :o
