Hopefully you'll enjoy the Chalabala Dvorak disc as much as myself (and a couple of others here as well), John !  ;)

Thanks, Andre. I listened to The Golden Spinning Wheel from Chalabala/CzPO before I bought the recording and LOVED it! Looking forward to hearing the other performances.

That is insane, Brian. I 100% agree!

I love the Dorati/New Philharmonia recording by the way. John, Mirror Image alert! ⚠

I'll definitely be giving these works a listen soon, Ray. It's been years since I've heard them.

My Bartok-aissance has begun!!

Nice haul, Greg! That Boulez recording of Bluebeard's Castle is my favorite of all the ones I own, which must be about 99% of them at this point. You'll have to let me know what you think of that Dausgaard recording. It seems to be garnering some excellent reviews. Oh and Fischer's entire Bartók series is definitely worth your time.

Bought some Aho I was missing from my collection (more than I initially thought):

All this talk of Florent Schmitt reminded me I wanted to get his Psalm setting. Tough to find Martinon, though...

The Psaume XLVII is a glorious blast! The Martinon recording is the best hands down. I feel that it has a special atmosphere that other recordings don't have, which benefits the grandeur and sheer sense of exultation the work possesses.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Now did you complete your Aho's BIS collection, John? I already intuit the answer.  ;)

:) Well...the a cappella choral and organ works recordings didn't interest me, but I think I'm only lacking the Wind Quintets, but I'll be getting this recording later.

MI, that bassoon concerto disc is awesome, and will start you down a Fagerlund journey also.

I went into the school where I work this afternoon to discover three boxes of classical music being sold off by the Music Dept. for £1.00 per CD for a school charity.
So, for £5.00 I bought the following:

Schoenberg: Verklarte Nacht etc (Double Album, Decca)
Great Musical Occasions from Westminster Abbey (VW, Bliss, Stanford, Parry etc)
Stravinsky: Rite of Spring/Apollo (DGG Karajan)
Brahms/Schumann: Symphony No.1 (DGG Karajan)
Khachaturian: Symphony No.3, Festive Poem/Ippolitov Ivanov etc (Chandos) - I already have this one but a spare copy is always useful  ::)

Well done!

Yeah, I wasn't going to buy this recording until I saw how substantial the work is: over 30 minutes.

Pssst... I liked the Fagerlund better... (His clarinet concerto album is the next step to take after that, if you like it too. The new cello concerto is sort of disorganized and long, to my ears.)

Considering that Aho as my favorite contemporary composer, we'll see how Fagerlund stacks up against this strong bias. ;) But thanks for the tip about the Clarinet Concerto album from Fagerlund.

I was finally able to locate a copy at a reasonable price. Hopefully that won't be cancelled by the seller as with the Schuricht/Scribendum box was... ::)

Hey, John.
I've just listened to the Boulez/Bluebeard, it is fantastic. I was impressed with the Dausgaard, or rather more impressed with the BBC Scottish SO, they sound really, really good and the Onyx sonics are perfect for such a colorful work like Mandarin.
