Interesting. The nice thing about these boxes is sometimes the things you think will be throwaways turn out to be the most interesting.

When I ordered yesterday it was $165 at Amazon.com. Today it is $189. Importcds.com has it for $161 but they report backordered. I've noticed other sites having it in stock, but around $200. The Markevitch/Philips was $93 on importers.com, but now their listing has disappeared. An amazon it has risen from $115 to $155 since yesterday.

It's like trying to buy a house!  ???

These conductor/artist "Big Boxes" aren't lasting very long at all, are they? The Markevtich boxes were released this summer, I think. I've been eyeing the Riccardo Muti and Andre Previn Warner Boxes for some time... money is a little tight right now, but I wonder if should "bite the bullet" anyway. That's what credit cards are for, right?  ;D
So much great music, so little time...

Bought via Amazon Japan:

Since I won't be buying the Previn Warner set -

And this box set of Solti conducted performances:

I've spoken negatively of Solti many times, but I haven't heard any of his Shostakovich. I've read Jeffrey (Vandermolen) likes Solti's 8th. Anyway, it'll be interesting to hear these performances.

A Shostakovitaton?

I don't see Paavo Berglund in your purchases. What happened, John? be serious!  ;) ;D
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Next time I go to Japan, I want to buy a few discs not issued in the USA or Europe. I will ask for your recommendation, probably next year.

I own Berglund's Shostakovich already. ;) I did have several of these Previn's, but I just love having them in the original covers and I do believe these have been remastered.

I'd like to go to Japan, too. I would spend a lot of time at Tower Records in Tokyo. There is an entire floor dedicated to classical music. 8)

Hah! Considering I own a s***load of Shostakovich already, I probably did myself a favor by scaling back. ;)

I have been to the Tower Shibuya so many times. There are a few other stores with Classical music discs in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto as well. Also, there are several classical music cafes, and they play classic music records with high-end audio set day and night. When I am in Tokyo, I visit some of them (and Jazz cafes) almost every night and have beer. Beer cost around $7, Cognac $15, and coffee costs about $5. There is a cafe, called Lion, close to the Tower Records.
You should go there someday. There is a direct flight from Atlanta.

The Previn/CSO Op. 43 is mighty toothsome.

It sure is. I own the old 2-CD set (coupled with some Britten works). I'll have to revisit it at some juncture.

I noticed that, too. :) I'd still have a blast in there I'm sure.

Found for a pittance "d'occasion, très bon" (it's long OOP):

I actually already own not one but two complete recordings of Orff's Antigonae (the Sawallisch on Profil —with Martha Mödl— and the Leitner included in DG's "Carl Orff Edition" —with Inge Borkh— ), but neither of them includes the libretto (Sophocles' play —uncut— translated into German by Hölderlin), which in this work is of paramount , as this is more a theatrical than a musical experience. This Orfeo d'Or release apparently does provide the sung (or, rather, in its most part declaimed) text.

i had ordered the libretti for both Antigonae and Ödipus der Tyrann (published by Schott) very cheaply online, but am sceptical that my order will be fulfilled.

I may have to jump on that flight one of these days. I've probably told you this already but Japan is one of the number one places I'd love to visit.
