Kocsis on piano was the first piano version (on LP) I acquired. It's effortless, straightforward and muscular and without any "romantic" tendencies but still pianistic in a neoclassical sense. Sometimes but not often I think this is the way one needs to hear it. In contrast to him MacGregor is more considered and musically rewarding, clearly the winner of these two.

Yes, it's good with some marked contrasts between the various recordings.

Indeed. Otherwise the aim of acquiring multiple recordings would be senseless.

Amazon here in Spain must have wanted to get rid of this quickly, as it was being offered much cheaper than anywhere else:

I already have a good chunk of this (the 2nd Viennese School and Bartók cycles, on a West Hill Radio Archives release), but at the price a got this for, it'll be nice to have these recordings in "original jackets" format, there's a bunch of other recordings --mainly of American music-- that'll be interesting to get to know, and this seems to be the only way to acquire Milhaud's Cantate de l'enfant et de la mère.

Did I need this box set? No. Did I want it? Obviously! :) Years ago, I was looking at the previous box set called The John Adams Earbox and, honestly, it didn't look too enticing at the time. This time around is much different in that this set contains much more, but also some rather nice looking (and hopefully informative) booklets. I own about 98% of this set, but looking at its contents there are a few things I'm missing: the American Elegies disc, which contains some orchestrations by Adams of other composers, Hoodoo Zephyr, I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky and a disc featuring more works I never heard like Roll Over Beethoven and I Still Play. It will also be nice to have a physical CD of Why Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes? since Deutsche Grammophon are apparently not interested in releasing it on CD (it's only available as a digital download or on vinyl). Anyway, for the price I paid and for the collectability of it, this John Adams set will be a welcome addition to my collection.

I've been looking at this recording for quite some time and finally came across one for a good price in a desirable condition so I jumped on it. This is one of my favorite Shostakovich symphonies. Chung is a respectable conductor and has turned in many great performances --- hopefully, he'll deliver the goods here.

Great stuff, Ilaria! I think you'll be happy with both of those sets. For many, the Schoenberg Quartet's traversal of Schoenberg's SQs are the benchmark. Of course, that set contains much more than the SQs like the String Trio, the original sextet version of Verklärte Nacht and other works. Enjoy!

Thank you, and thanks for the suggestion about the Lieder! Cool, I l'm curious to see if the Schoenberg Quartet's performance of the SQs is better than the Lasalle Quartet's, which is my favourite. They recorded a superb set of Zemlinsky's SQs, so it's not difficult to imagine they did excellently with Schoenberg's too; I was especially attracted for the inclusion of the String Trio, the Phantasy for Violin and Piano and the String Concerto.
