Mapman

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on October 02, 2023, 05:34:09 AMYes, you should listen to the whole thing.  ;)  :)  It's quite lovely and do I dare say calming(?).  I love how he incorporated bird sounds into it (from his native homeland).  The recording that I purchased some years ago was the one with Pommer.

Do you play the clarinet Mapman?

PD

Yes, I play clarinet. (That's why I'm so interested in music featuring the clarinet!) I think you've helped me decide what to listen to tonight!

-----------------

Before today, I didn't own any Mozart string quartets on CD. I now own a set which seems to be highly regarded around here:

Let me know what you think of it.

The Ballets Russes CD box set seems to have been the trigger for repackaging performances in various formats. I've not actually got as far as these in that box (Swan Lake is next) but I've heard very positive things about Previn.

Ah, great disc.  I find the final piece especially hugely impressive - perhaps my favourite bit of Adès.  I know everyone, including me, got fed up long ago of comparisons with Britten, but his spirit seems to live on in that piece.

Purchasing, purchasing... and after this I really need to stop. A mix of rebuys (2 things that Europadisc couldn't source thought dealing with them was excellent), things off eBay that I couldn't find from preferred sources in my last batch... and one from the Australian branch of the evil empire aka Amazon, where I couldn't deny that their 1 remaining copy was a miles better price than anywhere else.

This must be a first, I own and love most of the things on your list Madiel.  Enjoy!  The only recording I haven't heard is Pejacevic.  Also I don't own the Olafsson recording even though I've streamed it many times.

The Vikingur** albums, and possibly the Pejacevic, are the only things on this list that aren't rather old... which is one reason I'm mostly getting them off eBay (though some of the eBay ones are supposed to be brand new copies).

Some of my choices involve slightly silly aesthetics. I could get the Dvorak Suitner more easily if I was prepared to go for a very garish Brilliant Classics cover, but this edition was just so much more tasteful! And I'm not sure whether the separate Vikingur albums might have been cheaper (possibly not, with the one copy I found at a decent price), but it turned out that the 3 albums of his I want are exactly what's in this box, so that appeals to me as well.

**Sorry, I just can't call him Olafsson. Icelanders don't use surnames, and in Iceland I'm certain he would be listed under "V" not "O". Olafsson literally tells you that his Dad is called Olaf.

DH made a video about J.S.Bach - Johannes Passion & Matteus Passion - Herreweghe

At that point I realized I don't have any Bach by Herreweghe (I have some Herreweghe discs of other composers). I sampled Matteus Passion on Spotify and I was blown away! Absolutely amazing! No wonder DH recommended this cheap re-issue boxset.

So I ordered it. I also bought a German Naxos CD of Haydn's Symphonies 44, 45 and 49 (Helmut Müller-Brühl).

These were part of a large a large order of over 99 euros to get free shipping to Finland. The rest of the order was non-classical CDs and Spielberg's The Fabelmans Blu-ray which doesn't seem to get a Nordic release, which pisses me off a lot.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Is this the set?

If so it's an excellent buy. I have most of it in the form of earlier issues.

That's cantatas. Not Passions.
