On the recommendation of Dancing Divertimentian:

Now, in addition to the two Martinů operas featured on the disc above, I own Ariane (both recordings - Neumann and Netopil), Julietta, The Greek Passion, and The Miracles of Mary.

Also bought:

I'm merely filling in gaps in my Martinů collection at this point. There's still a few other recordings I'd like to buy but most of them are way OOP.

André

You should love the Martinu cantatas, John ! Although it's a single disc, it comes in a bulky case with a big booklet with texts and transllations. I love that disc.

After listening to Berio's Recital 1 (for Cathy)--as reported earlier in the WAYLT thread--, I  listened to the classic recording of Folk Songs with Cathy Berberian on the same CD, and was struck as never before by how fantastic these pieces are. Thus, I've ordered not one but two new recordings:

Here Berberian and Berio perform the (later) version with orchestra, which I do not yet know.

[asin]B000ASDG9E[/asin]I just had to have Dawn Upshaw (one of my favourite singers ever) in this music.

And as this was in my shopping cart from some previous time, it was ordered as well:
[asin]B009NF88XY[/asin]
Jesús Bal y Gay was one of the (minor) musical figures of the Spanish exile in Mexico after the civil war. He was on friendly terms with Stravinsky, and some music of his I listened to on Spanish National Radio the other day was appealing (Spanish neoclassicism typical of the time, but less refined and elaborate than that of Ernesto Halffter). This CD includes a curious reorchestration of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 (written at the behest of Carlos Chávez, to make the piece suitable for performance by "standard" symphony orchestras). Bal y Gay's wife Rosita García Ascot was a composer in her own right, and some of her music is available on CD.

Awesome, MI. Great catch. :)

In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Thanks, DD. My fellow Martinů brother. 8) By the way, I'm currently addicted to Ariane. Goodness...I can't stop listening to it!

Nice selections. Golijov is a composer I like a lot and I think it's sad all the negative press he's received.  That last one is a composer I've not heard of - might want to take a listen.

Perhaps a fair question is why has Golijov received the negative press in the first place?

Not really a fair question since I think the accusations and attendant press were inaccurate and unjustly maligned his name.  That's just my opinion, and I really don't want to rehash the issue again.

I believe they were plagiarism accusations and his repeated cancellations and missed deadlines.

Ah yes, sounds like this composer can't get his act together.

Yes, I remember the days on GMG when Martinů fans were few and far between, and you were probably the first to really strike up a Martinů conversation with me. Not to forget Luke, too, bless him. Haven't seen him lately though.

As far as Ariane, it's been awhile since I last heard the work. So...into the queue it a-goes!

I don't remember this at all, DD. What a nice memory indeed. 8) Yeah, I miss Luke, too. Such a knowledgeable person. Let me know how you get on with Ariane. Will be curious to know your opinion of it. Quite a lyrical work.

I Have a good mind to buy this box, for there is virtually nothing in my collection of this composer.
Are there some knowledgeable GMG ers who can tell me if it is worth the investment both in terms of artistic merit and sound wise.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Tye : Complete Consort Music / Phantasm

Liszt : The Complete Songs, Vol. 4 / Sasha Cooke

I have been buying each volume of the Hyperion Liszt song series as they came out.  I am not sure, but Vol. 4 might be the last one.  They have been very good listening and show a side of Liszt that is understated and luxurious.

The Tye consort music recording was one that we've talked about on the English consort music thread.  All I'd heard was the old one by Jordi Savall and this new recording looked interesting.
