There are no price controls at large in Canada, but some agriculture products have a minimum price, like eggs and dairies, which affords some kind of protection to farmers. In US/Canada trade relations, eggs and milk are four letter words south of the border...

A yes, "supply management." Yes, that was the thing the Trump's brain got fixated on while declaring NAFTA the worst deal in the history of the world. (There are a lot of worst deals in the history of the world, evidently.) In the U.S. it is sugar. The price of sugar is actually written into Federal law. It is just a matter of what special interest group is successful.

Notice that this, while accurately reflecting US attitudes to markets, completely fails to mention the consumers as part of the equation.

That is who many governments think they are helping by preventing total market dominance by 1 or 2 big players. And it's certainly who many consumers, aka voters, think that governments ought to be helping.

I'm a strong supporter of anti-trust action, and I wish the U.S. would take this responsibility more seriously. But the price controls, forbidding a vendor to offer a book at a discount, don't strike me as helping the consumer. (It is not clear to e if this restriction also applies to brick-and-mortar shops, or just to on-line sales.) Price is the primary regulator of the economy, why exempt booksellers? If such a scheme were introduced in the U.S. it would be "collusion" (which actually is a crime in this context, when nominally vendors agree not to compete on price).

Anyway, we are far off topic here. Didn't buy any classical music today.

A few Lutoslawski purchases:

The Urbanski recording was only $8 (+ free two-day shipping since I'm an Amazon Prime member) and the recording of the piano music is something I've been meaning to check out for quite some time and the same could be said for his String Quartet, which I don't believe I've heard before.

Spoke too soon, first purchased in a while, Roussel's Padmâvatî. Price was too good to be true. Hopefully not the case.

An anticipated problem is that the libretto is supposed to be downloadable from a web site, which I assume is now defunct.

Strange seeing you buy music with vocals, Scarpia.

Sometimes I have a lapse if it is something French.

Ah, so I take it you'll be listening to Enescu's Oedipe or have you already heard it?

I started listening and was very impressed by the prelude. Then it became clear there would be a lot of choral singing, and I lost steam. Will come back to it at some point.

Pounds the table! One of my favorite Sibelius recordings. I hope you enjoy as much as I have, Greg. I wasn't a big fan of Nightride & Sunrise previously, but after hearing Segerstam's way with this work, it opened up for me in a huge way. The same could almost be said about The Oceanides as well, but this piece had already started working its' charms on me thanks to Berglund.

Thanks, John. I've seen it posted here often, by you many times, so it was time to jump on board with it!!  ;D

Quite possibly the last Debussy orchestral recording I'm going to buy and one I've been hunting for a decent price for a year now:

I bought this recording for Jeux (my favorite Debussy orchestral work), but Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Images and Danses sacrée et profane are all gorgeous works, too. I've heard nothing but great things about this Baudo disc.

I've never known Baudo to disappoint. I have his recording of some of the same repertoire with the London Philharmonic but the Czech Philharmonic recordings are probably especially interesting. Enjoy.

By the way, just for you and me Scarpia: have you heard the Czech Philharmonic's vintage recording of Roussel's Third Symphony? That's an interesting one...I oughta dig it up again this afternoon.

Thanks, Scarpia. I own that Debussy LPO recording from Baudo as well, but haven't listened to it. Now that I've bought this one, which are earlier performances than the LPO ones, I'll have to do some comparative listening to see how Baudo's approach to Debussy matured through the years.

It turns out that I didn't own Ormandy's La Mer (or any of his other Debussy for that matter), so I bought this compilation as a result:

Hat-tip to aligreto from the 'Listening' thread.

I hope....

a) that I have not led you up the garden path with this one
b) that you enjoy it
c) you will let me know your honest thoughts when you get to listen to it.

This back order from Arkivmusic landed today. (Originally ordered on 3/15.)

Cello concertos by Shostakovich (no 1],  Garrido Lecca, and Kinsella. The Kinsella was the motivation to order it,

I don't know it. Also conducted by Baudo?

That Garrido is nice, JBS.
