Holst: The Planets [Dutoit]

I have 13 versions of the Planets but I have never heard Dutoit's version. I thought that I should rectify that.

It is viewed generally very highly by both critics and listeners alike.  Consider one of the great performances (unless you are John - Mirror Image).  ;)

Yes that figures!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

It's true, I didn't like Dutoit's Planets. Perfectionist Dutoit absolutely drained the life out of this music, IMHO.

Yes I have consistently read that over the years yet somehow I had not listened to it. We will see soon enough.

Nice.  :)

I and my children saw the production live in its second year (a similar—but not identical—cast, but conducted by Semyon Bychkov), and enjoyed it (a brief comment here). Perhaps it doesn't adapt all that well to the video format (I have the DVD—well, I have all Bayreuth productions that have been released commercially on DVD  ;)), but it remains a good record of a solid Bayreuth staging. I'd love to hear your impressions, if you care to share them.

I have ordered this thing three times:

1. A seller discovered they didn't actually have it in stock.  :-[
2. Shipped from China, but bore a similar fate to Amelia Earhart over the Pacific.  ???
3. Currently shipping from the UK; do I dare hope...?  :'(

I'm not sure I like the music of Sir Arthur enough to continue on if this next one doesn't arrive!

If this one doesn't arrive, chalk it up to destiny and forget about the composer. :D

I'll post this here because it is classical-related, but I just bought the Sennheiser HD 560 S headphones:

Symphonic Addict

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Good works those. I have them on CPO, though:

Good to know ! Today I listened twice to Juon's 3rd violin sonata (w. piano) and really liked it - original and distinctive. He was dubbed 'the Russian Brahms', whatever that's supposed to mean (probably nothing). This 2-disc set of the SQ was very affordable (used) so I figured it was a sound move.
