Just purchased this opera

Have been thinking about this for a long time but held off because of some doubt about the performances. Offered at an attractive price on discogs, so decided to go for it.

I'm not sure what you've read about the performances, but they are uniformly excellent. I actually should get back to this set. Anyway, a great buy!

I recall a few lukewarm comments on the forum, some expressing hope for a better cycle forthcoming [Nightingale, which will take years and won't be cheap].
At $18 ($22 and change with S/H and tax) for 7 CD, the Kontra set was in "Why not?" territory.

I've learned to ignore what people say when it comes wanting to hear repertoire that interests me and that I want to pursue. There never will be 100% agreement on performances anyway. I liked the Kontra set (or what I've heard so far), so hopefully you will as well.

Some Bliss to add today:

I really like that recording of 'Morning Heroes' (Bliss's greatest work IMO). I prefer it, for example, to the newish Andrew Davis recording as the puny 'return of the canon-fire' in the finale, in Davis's recording, retrospectively ruins the whole performance for me and puts it to the bottom of my list of favourites (Groves/Westbrook/RLPO is best of all). Kibblewhite's 'canon-fire' is much more powerful and moving and I quite enjoy Brian Blessed's OTT melodramatic narration.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Funny (though perhaps not so bright), I only now realized that I already have a Kontra recording (Langgaard SQ, 2 CD), on which I found their playing satisfactory.  ::)

I admit it is a work I do not know. I look forward to hearing it!

When you get round to playing it I'd be interested to know what you think.

Yeah, I think the Kontra recorded several of Langgaard's SQs. Also worth mentioning is they recorded Nørgård SQs Nos. 1-6 as well and these works were quite good (to the best of my memory).

Will do. Brian Blessed was definitely an added bonus for me.

Last night before Europadisc's Naxos sale ended I decided to grab a few Naxos catalogue discs I'd like to have around for regular house/car play. Some are new, and some are verrrrry old!

I suspect Florestan will approve of this order.

Great purchases there. The Massenet Suites are sheer delight.

Oh that is funny because I just put that on my Qobuz list a few days ago.  Will be listening to those recordings soon.

Hello - Did you get a chance to listen to the below recordings yet?

Interested what you thought of them? (same goes for anyone else who has heard the recording already)...

This is really funny...The Holmboe SQ box (Kontra Qt.) arrived: great condition, record fast shipping time (less than 48 hrs. from Brooklyn to Upstate NY), I love the music so far and performances seem outstanding, compositions and playing seem better than their Langgaard set I own.

Unfortunately, there's no booklet or track listing, just a box and 7 cardboard sleeves with no text.  I can easily crib a track listing, but the Da Capo website doesn't seem to have (at least for free) easily DL'able liner notes.

I don't actually think the Discogs seller hosed me; most of his offerings are non-classical and I suspect he just reoffered (without close inspection) something he acquired.
