Will be interested in hearing how you like Gergiev's "Nutcracker".  I have this recording with the Kirov and hated it; way too fast for me!  I noticed that your set is on two CDs though.

Sadly, it's in my pile to sell or give away.  :(

PD

Complete ballet on 1 CD is quite the giveaway. When Gergiev was good, he was very good. But he could be responsible for some turkeys.

Well Gergiev's Nutcrackers is well within the realm of what is considered the balletic tempo. You never heard Järvi's take I guess, he's probably delivered the fastest performance around, and I love it. Gergiev is a slug compared with Jarvi. But then again I have countless Nutcracker's in my collection and love them all.
And lets not forget that both performances I mentioned are concert performances, and therefore tempi are faster as with a ballet dancing to it. There are plenty that do and therefore the tempi are far slower.

O, believe me Karl, Gergiev is good in this performance. I heard him live doing it, many years ago in St Petersburg.

This 2015 performance is about 3 minutes slower than the earlier Philips recording.

I remember hearing the complete music for L'Arlesienne (I have no memory of who the performers were, but I think it included everything on this Belgian CD) on the radio many years ago.
Puts the familiar suites in a very different perspective.

This was probably the one I heard

To all,

For me, I suspect that it's because I think of it in terms of being a ballet--probably from a combo of seeing it when I was young, older recordings of it that I grew up with, performances that I've seen on t.v., etc.  Been quite a while since I listened to it (the recording in question), but it just felt very rushed to me.  All of the charm, delicacy, delight and magic in it were blasted through (Sorry!).  :(

I'll bear that in mind next time I see one of his discs for sale.  ;)  And, well, at least I purchased it used--so I expect that I'll be using it as a trade-in back at the store where I purchased it.

It's in original jacket format, which means there are several recordings in the set by performers without the JSQ. I thought it might be helpful to list them here.

Schoenberg: String Quartet No. 2: with Uta Graf soprano [CD 9, as part of the complete Schoenberg cycle]

Better listen (also) to another recording, for example Antal Dorati to make up your (own) mind. Dorati has two recording, one with the London Symphony Orchestra, the other with the Concertgebouw orchestra.
