+1 for both of these. I rarely purchase d/ls, but pulled the trigger on the Simpson symphonies a few months ago and have found them worth the price. I have become a real Simpson fan.

As for Tubin, I bought his symphonies blind in the mid 90's and thankfully, loved them straight away 🙂

Nice!  I got into Simpson 15 or so years ago when someone on this forum recommended him and I needed to fill a quota for a cd club.  The poster (who is still active) keeps changing his handle, and I can't for the life of me remember his current one. ???

I should take MI's advice and listen to more Tubin.

Just bought:

Great recordings, both !!  :)

————————————————————————————————————

I intend to keep quiet for a while. The pile just keeps growing and growing and, as we approach the warm season, I know I won't be listening to much music in the coming months. Unless of course something irresistible comes along  ;D !

I think there are worse ways to spend your money. My problem is, how do you find the time to make it all your own. I must confess that in my rather limited collection there are quite a few recordings that I have barely listened to.
Especially in the more contemporary works I often need to listen to a composition several times before the curtain opens in order to and feel really connected (if I'm lucky). I sometimes wonder if that is also an issue for other members. There are quite a lot of composers that I don't pay attention to,

I also find that "making it all your own" is a significant issue. Years ago when I was collecting LPs and prices were high and selection was much more limited than today every purchase was a carefully considered decision. I was thoroughly familiar with every LP I owned. I have reached the point where I listen to composers that are off the beaten path more often than Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, etc. But I still find it more satisfying to focus on a small set of composers that resonate with me, and get to know their style in depth. Certainly some of the composers whose names float by here on GMG would be of interest (many wouldn't) but I put a higher priority on becoming more familiar with works of my "favorites." There is a high barrier to jumping into something new. A compelling case by someone here who I highly respect is required.

Bought via the BIS store and I'm sure I'll be receiving a message from Robert von Bahr in due course:

As a fellow Yankee, I'm curious what sort of shipping experience you'll have and also what sort of pricing you got and how it compares to Europa etc.

The Organ symphony is a big ol' dud but the rest of that stuff (possibly including the Roma performance on the same CD, I didn't listen to it) is great.

I've bought from BIS several times in the past and have never had any problems.

Looks like the price is a flat 15 euros and then you subtract VAT and add shipping? Does it come out around US $16-18 each? BIS is a label I'd love to support directly with my dollars (already do through their download website).

They come out to be $15.93 each and the shipping is $18.06, so I paid $153.93 with currency conversion via PayPal.

Thanks, Dave! Looking forward to it.

Any time I can support a record label directly, especially if their prices are essentially the same as any other site, then I will.

Sure enough, like clockwork, I received a message from Bahr today and here's what he wrote to me:

Good morning,

as usual - see pics.  You S-S collection will be posted today, no fear.

Two things:  if the stamps are uncancelled and you want to earn a freebie of your choice with next order, just wet them off and return them to me @ BIS, cheapest possible way.
2)  If you could find it in your heart to not use PayPal, I would be almost 7% happier.  By now you know that we do deliver, so the added security shouldn't be necessary.

Best, enjoy and thanks - Robert

Apparently, Mr. Bahr isn't a fan of PayPal. :) Unless I'm buying on an overseas Amazon site, I always use PayPal, but per Bahr's request, if he gets a bigger cut by paying with my card directly through the BIS store, then I don't mind.

Paypal has a very large fee.  Significantly higher than directly using credit.

Yep, this is what I've gathered. As I said, I only use PayPal overseas and it's quick at checkout.

Yeah I use Paypal all the time because it is more convenient.
