The devil Jeffrey made me do it ! Our resident Walton expert enthused about this disc and I found it very reasonably priced. One of the great 20th century symphonies. It'll be nice to compare the violin concerto with the classic ida Handel account.

Time for another "will Arkivmusic actually ship this?"

All three are Weekend Specials or sale items.

You're in for wonderful discoveries: these concertos are magnificent.

Alerted to the release of this new recording of Braunfels' opera, I jumped on it right away. There's  another recording (on Decca) but it's oop and hard-to-impossible to find on the secondary market. Yay !

André,

Is it with all the same cast and recorded about the same time as the Decca one (but live)?

No, the Decca is from a 2001 Swedish Radio production with a mostly swedish cast. The Orfeo is from a concert (not stage) performance at the 2013 Salzburg Festival. The 2 sets share the same Jeanne (Juliane Banse) and conductor. Honeck seems to be a Braunfels specialist.

The question that lingers is 'why now?' This is from 2013 and Honeck had to raise money to buy back the rights.

Link to an EXCELLENT article on this disc (mostly about the music): https://artmusiclounge.wordpress.com/2024/09/02/walter-braunfels-jeanne-darc/comment-page-1/

I was 'contemplating' a purchase, but decided to skip the contemplation part and hit the buy button. Hard.

I'm afraid that despite attempts to stop buying new CDs, I'm once again driven by curiosity and to broaden my musical horizons. It's a pleasant pastime and we have to do something to avoid being just a leaf in the wind, even if that thought  might be a vain one. :)

You won't regret it my friend - it's terrific!

I'm tempted by this one as well!

The title of the piece is quite intriguing!

Just ordered this disc (used):

Of course I have muliple recordings of Ramuntcho (a favourite work) and the Piano Concerto (a piece I do not care much for, except for the scherzo), but this disc includes the only recording AFAIK of the suite from Pierné's early ballet Bouton d'or. The perfomers are a regional youth orchetsra, and their renditon of the Ramuntcho overture (on YouTube) is not the most polished, but well...

Nice haul, @Florestan !

If you do not know Gluck's Don Juan ballet, you --as a Mozartian-- are in for a nice surprise.

And I didn't know about that Prêtre recording of Alceste. Interesting, as I think very highly of soprano Consuelo Rubio.

I heard it on car radio this summer and loved it. (I think it was the same Gardiner recording)

There aren't too many Classical ballets recorded. Aside from Mozart's Les petits riens and Idomeneo I can think otomh of only two others, by Paul Wranitzky.

Both are excellent, I highly recommend them to any fan of the Classical period music.

But there's a very direct connection from Gluck's ballet to Mozart. Just wait 'til you hear it  :)

Well, I surely missed it at first hearing, but of course listening to music while driving is not exactly conducive to recognizing and appreciating its subtleties and connections.

I will listen carefully asap.

NumberSix

During COVID, I sucked into fountain pen collecting, and I spent a fortune constantly buying new and antique pens and every color and brand of ink - in large part so I could have something to post as a new purchase on r/fountainpens.

Thankfully, I have streaming music subscriptions, so a thread like this one doesn't do the same to me!  :P

I am constantly adding things to my streaming library, though, as a result of what I see here. I'll never get around to all of it. In a few weeks, I will end up deleting everything and starting over. I know. I've seen me do it.

Don't worry, I'm just as anarchic in my listening habits. It's not infrequently that I change my listening plans at very short notice, influenced either by what I read on GMG or in a book, or simply by a whim.
