Quote from: ChamberNut on June 17, 2025, 06:20:42 AMWell, look what arrived on my doorstep this morning. Unbeknownst to be, it just also happens to be Igor's birthday today.

That's a fine box..... :)

On JPC today looking for some bargains - picked up the recordings below each roughly half priced - V.19 of Spanyi's 20 CD set of CPE's KB concertos, now have about three-quarters of those discs; and a couple of 2-CD sets of Beauty Farm (been waiting for some of those to come down in price!).  Dave

Normally when I read a review and it recommends a definitive recording; I sometimes break down and purchase it.  90% of the time I am disappointed.  The recording is not much better than the recordings I already have.

I recently viewed Dave Hurwitz's recommendation for the best recordings of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony.
Since this one of my favorite symphonies, I broke down and purchased it.  Wow, what a performance.  Do not let the fact that it is a mono recording discourage you.  What a fantastic performance  ;D

This is the Hurwitz review that influenced me:

Agreed! The second movement in particular, nobody has ever done with the same intensity, I think!

Some sale stuff from Arkivmusic.
A couple of them, like the Oboe Concertos CD, are ultra-bargainy items.

Something is wrong with me. I remember being unimpressed by that recording of Shostakovich 10. I remember being very impressed with the Stravinsky.

I should revisit, I guess.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Mitropoulos/New York Phil live in Athens, perhaps.  Even more fierce than their studio recording.

Should be a good release, and I am awaiting it with anticipation.
Good day to you Jeffrey!
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Me too Harry - I like the combination of works and rate Edward Gardner much higher, for example, than John Wilson.
Greetings to you too :-)

I have to nod my head along with your own in regards to Wilson. I think Wilson is quite good when he sticks to English music, but the minute he steps into either French, Austro-Germanic or Russian music, he loses me. Edward Gardner is a more well-rounded conductor, but I'm not a huge fan of his either.

I'm not that keen on his recordings of English music either. Competent but nothing special IMO.

I know, off topic, but I can't get over how poorly that shirt fits him. It looks like it is way too baggy on one side, but not the other.

Quote from: Que on July 02, 2025, 01:15:04 AMI have to correct myself (from yesterday): on this new Binchois recording not just songs (12) but also sacred works (6).

Any thoughts about this release?

Der lächelnde Schatten

Since I already own most of the Aho BIS releases, I figured it was high time I add these two to my collection as well:
