My recent haul:

And this set:

I already own a lot of John Williams' soundtracks on CD, but I bought this set and the other recordings above mainly for his concert works, which have greatly impressed me. Looking forward to diving into this side of his oeuvre. Williams, Morricone and Goldsmith are my 'holy trinity' of film composers, but I'm always interested in other aspects of their music that don't get much attention.

I believe @arpeggio will appreciate the John Williams purchases especially.

Quote from: SonicMan46 on July 06, 2025, 01:34:38 PMHi Andrei - very interested in that Mozart box above - a good price for me on JPC in the attachment - just curious about the packaging (hope simple sleeves?) and the performances?  Appears to be in the early 2000s mostly?  Please advise - Dave  :D

It took me forever to find this because I expected it to be in the recordings, considering thread! Dave, I've finally given a listen, popping in my favorite... The Gran Partita. The recording (brilliant classics) is fine, but nothing special. It would be good if you didn't already have recordings of these works, but I don't think this box is something you need to add to your collection.

For reference, here is my gold standard Gran Partita:

I also like the music of Crumb.  I have the Crumb CD in my library.

Der lächelnde Schatten

Also bought:

It's nice seeing James Ehnes on the Pentatone label. I hope this partnership continues, because I always thought he wasn't getting enough exposure on Chandos.

Judith

Well, decided after seeing this performed last Saturday at a concert, that I would order a recording and it has just arrived.

Lutoslawski

Concerto for Orchestra.

Also has Symphony no 3 which I will give a listen.

Performed by
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim.

André

Rare violin and piano sonata recordings

The Lajtha piece is a world premiere. I've never heard of Ingenhoven, but he is in excellent company on this disc.

Strange bedfellows or imaginative programming ? I love lute music anyway.

Wanderer

@Wanderer I love Nott's Mahler and have the entire set. I love Bavouzet's Haydn and have the whole set of the piano sonatas. I'll have to check out his recording of the concertos.

Der Schattenmann

Just added two more John Williams soundtracks to my collection:

Excellent discs those. The pieces on them are unabashedly joyful, full of life for the most part and quite colourful.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.
