The only thing I don't get about that set is the covers?

They don't seem very "classical."

Maybe, but I'd argue they're still very Vivaldi.

Who's "baroque" anyway.

Just bought (yes, I'm completely insane at this point and I think I haven't quite finished for the day)

Also ordered, and bought if Europadisc can get hold of stock though to be honest I'm quite doubtful about 2 of these, and a little doubtful about the third:

Okay, I think this is the last until I do some more sums/research, I do have my eyes on a source for a bunch of the operas but I want to see if there are better options. After that will come the tricky bit...

Just ordered - hopefully Presto can get hold of the 2nd one, they definitely have the 1st.

Found a copy in Australia on discogs. Dove in.

Plotting the best combinations for about half a dozen more, but this was an isolated sale so I could pull the trigger.

I've spent quite a bit of money today...

Invested, Madiel, not spent...  ;)

Enjoy your purchases!

Hopefully all will come through, and you're already close to the halfway point!

They're all from a single series by the same photographer, and some, like the bassoon concertos, form a mini-series with the same model and motif.

Imagine how much I "invested" by holding onto my money for up to 25 years. This series has been released across nearly half my life... am I going to see the finish?  :o

I've been pleasantly surprised, though, in what I've eventually dug up by ferreting around in eBay and discogs. There are some hideously expensive copies out there, and sometimes people also want to charge huge amounts for shipping, but I've uncovered Australian copies repeatedly - better for me on shipping, and leaves some reasonably priced copies for buyers in Europe or the USA.

Yes, I've bought/ordered 36 volumes today (taking into account separate volumes in those box sets I started with, 2 of which include an additional non-series disc). There are 4 where I think there's some risk that Europadisc or Presto will come back and tell me they can't get hold of it (2 fairly high risk, 2 a bit lower).

There's a good chance of me pulling the trigger on another 3-6 tomorrow. Or more. We'll see. I met some friends for lunch today which gave me a break, and I told them: if you want to see me engaging in obsessive behaviour that disrupts my normal routine... it's when I'm hunting for a good price on a rare classical CD. And this might be the biggest such exercise I've ever done.

Also booking accommodation for overseas trips. That's nearly as intense.

Quote from: Harry on August 12, 2025, 10:40:56 PMWell I am happy to read that you like Schelb's music too. I am shouting this from the rooftops quite some time, that he is a considerable force.

I met with friends recently and put his bass clarinet concerto in the player. People were saying 'Wait a minute, who is this guy ?' 'Very inventive, so well crafted !' etc.

I'm inspired by @Madiel to revisit Vivaldi, it has been too long!

Of course, after doing this there's a faint risk that I resent spending the next 3 years on Vivaldi. But the thing is... I think I actually find Vivaldi quite bingeable.

Yes, but it all adds up to a sum total, whereas your enjoyment will know no bounds.

It's also still less than I spent on a painting recently. But that's a whole other story which would require visual aids so you could see how utterly awesome the painting I own is.

Aha. New rule. Although my CD player is in a different room... I must listen to Vivaldi in the presence of the painting.  ;D

JUST BOUGHT when I was about to pack it in for the evening, because:

1. I stumbled across a completely new, still wrapped in plastic copy, which already made me nearly fall off my chair, and
2. Someone at "Buffaloschoolsurplus" in upstate New York decided to significantly cut the price so that it was suddenly the second-cheapest copy (yes, cheaper than every used copy except one). It was already looking like a good deal before that.

;D  ;D  There is already a Vivaldi page in the spreadsheet. It's just going to get a bit longer - although 3 hours of opera only requires one line.

I do so admire your dedication! You are starting to remind me of Herbert Somerton Foxwell whose massive collection of business and economic books formed the basis of the famed Goldsmiths'- Kress Library of Economic Literature; he reportedly said:  "I have often regretted not buying a book, but I have never regretted buying one." Substitute "Naïve Vivaldi CD" for book and you have a (likely) Madiel quote! About Foxwell, "Over time he became ever more insatiable, sometimes buying whole collections, and not merely single volumes. He came to regard it almost as a moral fault to miss a desirable purchase." Keep up the good work!
