Completed a major task today, so I indulged in purchasing this recording (40 bucks + 10 shipping):

I really, really want that booklet, lol.

Outside the Urrugne church, where a concert of the Ravel Festival was taking place this evening, there was a stand selling (slightly overpriced, but well) books on the composer and CDs of Ravel's music or performed by musicians related to the festival.

I couldn't resist getting these:

Bertrand Chamayou is the director of the festival, and tonight appeared in the two piano version of La Valse (along with Kirill Gerstein). This recent release complements his acclaimed 2026 traversal of Ravel's solo piano music, with works in homage to the composer and transcriptions (some by Ravel, some by Chamayou).

This intelligently and symmetrically programmed CD by Javier Perianes, Josep Pons and the Orchestre de Paris presents (in this order) Alborada del gracioso (orchestral version), Le Tombeau de Couperin (solo piano), the Piano Concerto in G major, Le Tombeau de Couperin (orchestra), and Alborada del gracioso (solo piano).

Bertrand Chamayou's erstwhile teacher Jean-François Heisser is director of the Ravel Academy (associated to the festival). His and his pupil Jean-Frédéric Neuburger's recording of Stockhausen's Mantra was aired on France Musique the other day, and I was sufficiently impressed with the snippet I listened to (and did not wish to subject my partner to too much Stockhausen on the road) as to buy it when I saw it.

Krommer and the Stamitzes will be new to me.

Apart from Reger's great Beethoven Variations the rest of the program will also be new to me.

I don't recognize most of the names on that cover; that said, I do really enjoy what I've heard of Rhiannon Giddens.  She is amazingly talented!  I've heard several albums of hers (including some with her also talented partner Francesco Turrisi).

Will be interested in reading your comments and thoughts about this album.

I promised myself that when the current hard disk I use for downloads will be full, I will stop getting any new recording until I will have listened to all the ones I currently own. So, 17 GB still available for me.

The flaw in  getting that Queffelec recording lies in the fact you should have gone for the Complete Queffelac set. Although I suppose that would use more than 17 GB.

[But it is good, as is the Lewis/Osborne CD.]

Just bought:

Possibly I've paid a little more than necessary (most expensive yet once tax and shipping added), but it seems to be one of the rarest ones. When there was an eBay seller who was prepared to drop the price significantly, I didn't drop it that much more with my counteroffer.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I think you'll find it worth your trouble.

Average it out with the cheapest one ;) .

Oh trust me, I've been doing the maths on the average cost per disc to justify the upper range ones. Of which there are likely to be more to complete the set...

Also I was very happy to discover that my annual tax return perfectly covered the main batch of purchases, with about A$40 to spare. I've gone over that now, of course, but it helped say that I'm not crazy to be spending as much as I am.  But the fact is, I can afford it regardless - I'm well aware I'm in a pretty fortunate financial position compared to the rest of the world.

It's when I go back to those people wanting several hundred dollars for a single disc that you know I've gone truly crazy. No, wait, there's the guy on French Amazon who sets the price at 2,000 Euro for each and every one. I wonder if he even HAS them. Surely there's some economic theory that says your assets are worth absolutely nothing if you make it vanishingly unlikely you will ever offload them. He makes the guy who wants up to 275 Euro look sane.

Prices like those could almost tempt one to buy from the Stockhausen online store ::) .

I know just enough about Stockhausen to understand what you're saying.

However, I personally have no real desire to know more than that.  ;D

I find the few cheap recordings I possess add a bit of variety to my listening but I couldn't quite get him into my top 25 composers ;) .

arpeggio

I am a fan of the music of Joachim Raff.
While reviewing my library I found that I was missing the following symphonies: 1, 2, 4 and 6.
I purchased the following to complete my collection.

The following items had been in my JPC cart for some time but I didn't feel any urgency in placing the order. But two days ago JPC added the Glassworks CDs I did not yet possess in their 'Neueangebote' section at a discounted price. Since these tend to disappear quickly, I figured it was time to pull the trigger.

I have no idea what can have prompted the inclusion of the Antal Dorati (as composer) in this 'exklusiv set' of Haydn symphonies, but there it is. I was missing these from the Fey/Klumpp series, so, nice.

And the Glassworks discs:

Mister Sharpe

Been avoiding the upscale/resale shoppe 1.) because there hasn't been much of interest there lately and 2.) I wanted to test my willpower. But after two and half weeks, decided that surely sufficed in the Willpower Dept.  $2 each. The performers of the Offenbach cello duets want listeners to know that they have five (!) other CDs with Offenbach cello duets. I confess to being intrigued.  I think I might own this Trout already but my CDs are boxed up and inaccessible right now, so can't check.*  I like the Franks, père et fille.  *Actually, I'm sure I do; I was deceived by the cover change, not the first time!

Only 2 1/2 weeks?  You must have been sweating bullets and risking a mental collapse by then!  ;D  ;)  Sorry, I couldn't resist.   :)

Best wishes,

This has been a collector's itch for a couple of years now... Passed it over when it was widely available and regretted later not to get this boxset of Russian live recordings that - to my knowledge - are not available streaming.

Prices were off the charts, but now fortunately an affordable copy showed up.

I'm looking forward to the old fashioned thrill of receiving a recording that I have hunted for for a long time. I thought those days were long gone!  ;D
