The first half of life is spent in longing for the second, the second half in regretting the first.

André

Ponnelle is the son of noted opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. His main pursuit is orchestra conductor. Samples seemed promising (i.e. not OTT avant-garde nor vapid minimalism).

I've loved and cherished the Suite from my earliest years as a music lover (Fricsay and the RIAS Symphony Orchestra) sometime in the early seventies. I've never listened to the complete opera. This recording was roundly panned on account of Peter Ustinov's antics as narrator. The competition is a long unavailable Hungaroton recording under Ferencsik - which I'd have preferred if it had been available. It'd be great if the narration could be edited. Anyhow, I'll figure by myself if it's really intolerable. Fingers crossed.

I have it as part of this

The narration is typical Ustinov humor, so if you like Ustinov's style you'll like him here, and if you don't, you won't.

@Madiel Keep sticking your change--and some of those Australian dollars-- into your piggy bank!  ;)

My piggy bank is just fine. Which is why I can justify the level of expenditure.  But I'm still not going to reward the rip-off merchants asking 3 or 4 hundred dollars for one CD.

Could I afford it? Actually yes, for the few volumes remaining I absolutely could. Do I think that's a good use of money? No.

This is only the 2nd oratorium of Caldara I have a recording of. The other one is Maddalena Ai Piedi Di Cristo, which René Jacobs recorded and is one of the best Baroque vocal recordings I know.

This landed today from the Amazon MP vendor. Still shrinkwrapped and still with the Borders Bookstores price label on it.

For the benefit of non-Americans: Borders went out of business in 2011.

The eBay seller of this one did an excellent job of packing so it's arrived in excellent nick. Unfortunately it's also arrived with a "gift" - feedback reveals that this seller has a habit of throwing in bonus CDs. Which might be nice if she put any thought and effort into it, but I'm not aware of which universe would consider Vivaldi violin concertos can be suitably matched with Norwegian heavy metal.

So now I have to decide what to do with it. Possibly I will figure out how to make a sale on eBay and recoup at least a little of my costs. But nobody will compensate me for the time spent dealing with a piece of junk. If she couldn't sell it, she could have donated it or thrown it into her American landfill instead of potentially polluting Australia.

EDIT: Okay, pollution is the word. Because it turns out that this album is (1) made by a convicted murder, (2) who is also a neo-Nazi, and (3) apparently this album is considered bad even by people who like his music. I gather the lyrics here are not neo-Nazi, just a bunch of old Norse stuff that's quite liked by people who think whites are particularly wonderful.

I'm not profiting off this. Landfill. Or possibly CD recycling, I'm investigating.

I read somewhere (possibly on this forum) about folks using unwanted CDs in their garden to try and scare away would-be foragers.   Just a thought.   :)

Oh no. It's not staying on the premises.

Plus I have no desire to scare away the lovely local birds. But even if I did want to do that, I wouldn't be leaving a Nazi's album literally hanging around.

I hadn't thought of it from that perspective; I was thinking of it more from the perspective of keeping it out of a landfill and possibly doing something useful (Didn't know whether or not you grew/grow any fruit and/or veggies).  *In any event, good luck!

*If nothing else, it might be "good therapy" to have a go at it with a hammer--wearing protective glasses of course and some decent gloves.

Re:  birds, sometime I'd love to hear about what kind of birds regularly visit your yard--birding thread would be a good place.   :)

Love the artwork on this one and it got a diapason d'or, so a no brainer.

Just throw it away already.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

I will if the place that apparently recycles CDs won't take it.

Is the place within a *short driving distance or would you have to mail it to them?  Unless there are issues with too many CDs dropped off lately [and they are not currently taking more in], if they recycle CDs, they recycle CDs--period.  Just call them--problem solved.  :)

*and hopefully, you might have other stuff to bring to them too:  metal/wood/appliances, etc. (though I suspect that you, hopefully, sorted through a lot of things before moving to your new home).

You might also want to send a politely-worded message to the person who included this to you; I suspect that he/she/they probably didn't bother to investigate the album like you did and maybe just included it as a "freebie" (after probably seeing that it had no monetary value).  Just a thought.  It might make them think twice.
